We would find under story pawpaws growing on islands in the James River. I used to wait for them to get ripe. Finally, we got to them first.
I have to say that I was disappointed because I envisioned something with far more texture, taste, and sweetness. But it is a wonderful plant which seems very exotic. People buy them here in Virgina at Edible Landscapes (if they are still in business.) Your article was very well written and informative.
