What a great deal of energy you have, and great imagination as well. It sounds like it would be fun to be your neighbor. Thank you for an interesting article...oh and nice pictures, too.
I will have to say the biggest challenge to the whole yard garden is keeping it watered when there is no rain and water restrictions and a drastic increase in water prices.
When it rains, it's gorgeous. When it doesn't it means work and innovation. But at least my other half doesn't have to do the work so he doesn't much care!
You need to tell us more about your front yard gardens!
My neighbor watches as we expand our front gardens year after year and has told me several times that soon we won't have any lawn left!! So far, our lawn is 1/2 the size it was! I THINK we're done now since we like the lovely green of it. And in answer to required watering, our plants are evergreen, shrubs, and perennials mostly. The added annuals need watering more, and we have many rainbarrels and a well which is very full with all the rain that we've had here in zone 5!!! I LOVE THE LOOK OF THE JAP MAPLE, THE BOXWOODS, HOSTAS, AND THE DAYLILIES ESPECIALLY!!!
I must agree!
The first- very first thing I did when I bought the house I had alread lived in for 7 years was expand the garden beds, with a step increase plan year over year to expand until there is nothing left of "lawn", If you think about it, lawns are the biggest waste of real estate in the U.S.!
Great article! I have been in my house for a little over two years, and my goal too is to have very little lawn, and mostly garden. Little by little, I chip away at it. I've planted, among other things, cone flowers and tickseed - both native to where I live in Illinois. I'm also trying to cover more space with ground cover to reduce the amount of mulching and weed control I do now. It's such a long process, but I'm loving it.
