I bought a dozen marigolds about 2 months ago, and I'm not sure which type they are. They are orange when they are fully bloomed (see pic). But when they first open up, they look more red than orange. (I'll post another pic to illustrate that below.)
And here's the second pic, showing some newly opened blooms. They all came from the same six-plant container. (Sorry, I don't know the proper name for it. I am extremely new to all this. I just got started with outdoor plants/flowers this spring!)
No problem! This is the second year I've had them, and I love them. I generally dislike marigolds, but these two toned ones are very pretty! Good luck with them!
You know, when I planted these, I didn't expect to like them very much. But I'd been told it would keep dogs away from my roses because they don't like the way the marigolds smell, so I planted some anyway. I'm not sure how true the dog-repellant thing is, but once I saw how beautiful they looked, I didn't care whether it kept dogs away or not.
I'll be keeping some of these around every year now. :)
And thanks... I need all the luck I can get, being new to all this!
I'm not sure about the dogs, but they're also supposed to keep bugs away. Not sure if they do or not. I think I have read that you can boil the leaves of marigolds to make "tea" to use as an insecticide.
They're so pretty and EXTREMELY easy to grow, they're definately worth keeping. Just save the seeds from these for next year, and you'll never buy any again. They also might reseed, I know I've had volunteers pop up after winter, so who knows!
Don't worry, I need all the luck I can get too, still. Enjoy your summer!
I never heard that about boiling the leaves. Interesting!
They really are easy to grow. I think they are the only thing I have that hasn't given me at least a wee bit of trouble. LOL I'll definitely be saving the seeds!
Enjoy your summer as well, and thanks again for the ID help!
