We have some ferns growing in a mossy area under a tree. We have many ferns that were here, but this is the only place on the property where I see this fern. As seen in the photo, the fronds don't seem much bigger than 7," and they do have spores on the back side.

It looks like our Polypodium glycyrrhiza-licorice fern.I'm guessing there's an East Coast variety of Polypodium.

Agree with Polypodium. Try keying it out here: [HYPERLINK@www.efloras.org]

Nedhudson1 - I checked out the Polypodium glycyrrhiza-licorice fern and some references look similar but have more pointed fronds as seen at [HYPERLINK@calphotos.berkeley.edu] and some say they grow from 1-2 feet. These have been here a long time and are definitely smaller, but other references describe the mossy environment at the base of a tree which is like mine.

Resin - I am not astute enough to navigate that site. I will leave this post open a few more days, but will be happy enough to know it is some kind of Polypodium.
