I bought my Cecile Brunners from a nursery online, they were shipped to me bare-rooted. So, not really knowing what bare root roses were, I was quite surprised that when I got them they were such tiny baby plants! I planted my Cecile Brunner roses in early April of this year and have tried to take good care of them. One of them has sprouted 3 long canes, they are about 4 feet long which is promising. The other has gotten pretty bushy (about 24 inches in diameter) but has not sprouted like the other, hoping this one will take off like her sister. I'm trying to allow these roses to climb on my 5 foot wood fence.
Questions: When the canes are long enough, should I take the first growing canes and 'strap' these to the highest point on the fence (to make them grow horizontal) and then strap successive canes underneath?
How long did it take for your Cecile brunner to be well established? Did it grow slowly at the beginning, or did it grow like crazy? Did you fertilize the roses every month during its growing time?
I would just like any info/advice so my C. brunners will grow nicely. Thanks for any advice!
They MAY have accidentally shipped you a climber and a BUSH type CB...maybe not. Keep an eye on the one that isn't sending up long canes...if it doesn't. it's probably the shrub/bush cultivar.
CB is a very easy rose to grow (at least here it is...I don't know about Va. though...) and if you anchor the canes to your fence, it should be OK. BUT, CB can get enormous ! It's very "forgiving" as far as pruning goes, so it'll be hard to mess it up too badly.
Mine grew extremely FAST and was huge in 3 years...almost TOO big, but I keep it trimmed on a regular basis.
Don't know much about growing roses in your climate, but someone will come along and be able to tell you more.
It's one of my favorite roses, and the only one I never feed. It grows fine w/o any feeding. I've seen them thrive on neglect.
