Good to read your story. I live in Northern CA and was finally able to get rid of my lawn. Unfortunately, neighbors all around are still putting in new sod lawns. My front yard is filling up with drought-tolerant perennials and succulents. This summer, I have squash plants growing to feed the neighbors who might complain. It has been a tremendously fun experiment.
I moved from southern Mississippi with wonderful acidic dirt to San Antonio, Texas with clay and rocks, very alkaline in 1991. I battled drought and flash floods (no in-betweens) for 5 years, then moved 40 miles away to sandy loam (I only saw the sand) and NO RAIN for SEVEN years. Then we had the flood of the century... TWICE in FIVE years. At least I learned to go with Bermuda grass, it'll live as soon as it gets a drop of rain. Meanwhile, my health took a dive, and I decided on a no-mow lawn in 2006. My neighbors surely thought I was crazy, but now all I get are compliments. I've left only drought tolerant perennials in the front yard, so I can spend all my time in the back. The front was finished in November 2007. Like everyone else, I work here and there, but the back is taking shape now. I am loving it more and more. NO MOW LAWNS!!!! Pictures will be posted on the Landscaping page soon.
