I have been a hobby gardener. The pain of paying the high prices for groceries is making me look at quadrupling the size of my garden and starting to preserve my own food. I grew up on a farm and except for things like Spam, tuna fish, and canned soup we grew and raised about everything we ate. Now with the cost of groceries, I wonder if it would not be cheaper to raise and preserve my own food? I know that the initial cost of jars will hurt, and the cost of taps each year will be there, but if I am raising my own food, saving my harvest and seed, its got to be more cost effective in the long run.
Anyone doing this now? Can you really save money, have more fun gardening and eat better?
Is anyone undertaking saving all their heirloom seed? This seems key to making it cost effective.
