Jocie, this is a wonderfully written article and I am jealous of your aviary and your close relationship with 'your' birds. I would love to have one, but I doubt I could ever undertake a project like that. It looks beautiful. I do have a question though, about the legality of keeping wild birds in captivity. Recently, I just happened to run across the Migratory Bird Treaty Act because I was applying to have my property certified as a wildlife habitat. I hope that you have checked federal and state/local laws. Don't mean to be a wet blanket, just saw this online so I thought I'd mention it.

Again, great article.

Ohh just a quick reply to clarify. Those photos arent my aviary! LOL I wish they were though.
It is legal to keep just about any animal if you have the proper permits.. but it differs from county to county so I can't really say if it's legal for you or so and so. :-( Sorry.
Then there are some animals that youd be hard pressed to get in trouble for having, like say a starling lol. No one seems to care about them. :-(
In some cases it'd be a lot of red tape though so unless youre obsessed (or know someone who could help, hehe) it wouldn't be worth it lol.

Those aviary photos came from Wikipedia.com. They have a lot of free use photos and it's cool for using in articles. All the bird photos actually, except the bluejays lol.

http://www.fws.gov/permits/mbpermits/birdbasics.html This may help a lil. Im kind of rusty with the laws now lol.
Thanks for reading!!!

Starlings are not protected because they are not native birds (they were introduced from Europe).
