Just loved your article and totally agree. I live in the city and space is at a premium. I have a little shade garden in the front of my house. My house is a house of "many decks". My kitchen is directly in front of my house so that I can have birds eye view of my garden and the neighbors, which are sometimes squirrels, cardinals, mourning doves, and blue jays. I have a tiny deck off the kitchen with a window box full of flowers. The garage is in the back of the house and there is a large deck on top. Since land is dear, we had a strip of land along side our garage with was about 3 feet wide. We build a retaining wall and filled it with many truckloads of dirt to bring it up to the height of the deck. Now this deck and separate garden area is my oasis. I have many containers of plants, all in the color scheme of blue or yellow. But one thing that I bought to enhance my outdoor oasis is a Mad Mat. I do not know if you or your readers know about this. These are gorgeous outdoor rugs made of PVC vinyl and come in many patterns. They can be rained on and the like. It really makes your outdoor space seem more like a living area. I must confess that I got really carried away this year with decorating my garden room. I bought a blue beaded curtain to separate the garden area from the deck. Dear little Petey the Cairn Terrier wants to boss the birds and he is afraid of the beaded curtain. So this keeps him out of that area. I also bought a matching two tiered beaded chandelier to hang on the Mexican roof on the deck. Last week I found a beautiful solar fountain in blue ceramic. Now I will be in heaven and will never want to go in the house. Gee, does winter really have to come?
