I was a volunteer for the wildlife rescue and have various wild animals, birds eat right from my hand. I'm not worried about that because they are cautious of other people. The now adult animals even bring me their sick young. I worked at a local nursery and a certain bluejay, Whipper Snapper, brings back seeds and plants them. We feed them all peanuts and had to change to the roasted ones because Whipper had planted his in my flowerpots. No lie. So now I just find old dried up peanut shells. She brings her young to the feeder to show them to me. I feel like I'm a proud grandma. The redbelly woodpecker bangs on the feeder when it's empty. I had a captive male cardinal in a 24' x 16' x 8'high "bird house " for 5 years. I'd taken him to the animal hospital and they were going to put him down because his wing was damaged and would never heal. I was a little worried I didn't have a permit. It wouldn't have cost anything. But I tried to stick to all the rules of the fish and wildlife. When I sold my tropical birds to the wildlife ranger he saw the cardinal and commented that he had great living quarters here. And he loved the flowers from the texas sage. Here's a partial picture, I think it's winter and it's covered in plastic, which I roll up like blinds during the day.
Back in the day they would have burned me at the stake for being a witch.
