I planted Kennebec potatoes in a 30 gallon garbage can as a spring experiment but am hooked now. I'm wondering if I can do potatoes for a fall crop in south GA? Does anyone know?
~Thanks!

In S.E. Texas, potatoes are planted the first week of September. I wonder if you could plant maybe a week or two earlier?

Also if they are in a trash can, then you have many more options to protect them by rolling them up close to the house and/or covering with tarps.

Thanks Feldon ... :) I probably know the answer to this next question but here goes anyway. I know you're not suppose to reuse your dirt, but what about if I stirred in some fresh with it and used it for my late season crop and then let it rest? I'm going to have to start composting. Potting soil is getting expensive! LOL

All you really want to do is kill pathogens... but the downside is that you also kill beneficial bacteria. I'd risk re-using it as-is.

But, you can sterilize dirt or potting soil to re-use it. Put it in a metal pot on a hot BBQ grill, cover, and 'cook'. I don't remember how long... it has been a long time since I saw a thread on it here on DG. I'd suggest just letting the coals burn down, if you really want to do this. You can do it in the oven but it stinks up the house.

Up north in Ky they recommend planting fall potatoes in mid July. I'd guess about a month later and plant your starts deeper to protect them from heat. The county extension office here puts out a booklet that gives local dates as well as a bunch of commercial chemical stuff I'm in no way interested in. Guessing though.
