I'm looking into getting an external as well and worried about failure. I was advised to plug it in only when I'm using it; otherwise, keep it turned off. Another person advised me to make sure that I get one with a fan - and a lot of them I've looked at are completely enclosed, no fan. I guess the biggest problem with these is heat. Did you have yours on a lot?
Mine is Western Digital, but I disconnect it when I am not doing a back-up, although I didn't at the beginning. Then I realized that if a lightning storm got to my computer, it would hit my external HD too, and what good was the back-up then...
Question What is the purpose of an external hard drive? I have started doing movie videos and after about 350 images the machine begins to bog down and get sluggish. Will an external drive help with this?
Saving photos and videos and any other things that uses up your computer space can be saved to an EHD. My pictures and documents are backed up there to be safe in the event of a computer crash and to keep from bogging down my computer.
Luckily I have not experienced an EHD failure but I have lost a couple of computers...one to age and one knocked off my desk during remodeling. I'm using my laptop now and just got a warning that I was running short of disc space. I'll be offloading some photo folders tonight.
I also keep copies of the photo programs I use that do not have discs. I'll never just download from a site again...I'll always buy the disk...lesson learned. Luckily my husband is good at disc recovery so I've never lost much
I'm waiting on TB sized EHDs to become more reasonable LOL I'll also only buy an EHD that has an on/off switch but that is finally becoming standard
