Would appreciate assistance with an ID for this one. It was the only survivor of its type in one of my containers. Not sure what it is and if it is possibly a weed. See that some of the leaves are browning slightly so I want to be sure I have it in the right type garden (sun vs. shade).

Thanks
Melissa

It looks like the weed that I am constantly pulling and digging from my perennial beds, BUT, I am no expert, lol.

Looks very much like the Ragweed that grows around here...Ambrosia artemisiifolia.

I agree that it looks a lot like common ragweed, yet it doesn't look quite right. Maybe because of the growing conditions? In any event, ragweed has a very distinctive odor. If you crush one of the leaves and smell it, you should be able to tell right away if it is ragweed or not.

Yes it looks like a ragweed , but my orange cosmos and feverfew both look like ragweed too.
Where either of the two above mentioned seeds in your winter sown group?

since i have been pulling TONS of ragweed the past few days... they have a 'furry' feel to them on the stem. that is how i tell them from tall marigolds and certain cosmos.

if it's furry -- it's most likely ragweed.

LOL Mellymass, I have a bunch of the same plant, and I've also been waiting for a bloom to figure out if it is an unlabeled WS plant, or a weed. It looks a lot like marigold, but I didn't plant any of them. I did, however, start a container of cosmos that never did a thing, and finally dumped the soil in one of my beds (can't recall which). Maybe my cosmos seeds finally germinated???

Sure hope it isn't ragweed. I have enough allergy problems already!

Angie

edited to say: went back to my database, and it was cosmidium, not cosmos, that I'd sown, and their leaves look very different than this. I'm really afraid we both have ragweed. Your second picture is almost identical to the one in the link someone else posted above. And that U of I site above says the seeds can live 80 years! Aack! I'm going to go pull them right away tomorrow!
