Different.

Most specifically, especially because we are sending photos of gardens, I see a lot of "Before-and-After" or "Spring-Summer-Fall" "composite" photos.

I want to do that ... without investing a lot in software that I will not understand or otherwise be able to use.

How about an article on that?

Got that planned too. I do a lot of that sort of thing. Check out photofiltre.com It's a FREE photo editor and it comes in many languages too. :-) There are 2 versions of it. The regular Photofiltre and then Photofiltre Studio. Both have free trial offers. The studio version does all the things the "big boy" software does. Including working in layers. The trial on the Studio version DOES end in 30 days though. Not sure what the cost is after that. The regular version is still usable FREE after the 30 days. I've used this program for YEARS! There are many plug ins and add ons available for both of these programs. One of these days, I'll break down and buy the studio version. I'm just a cheap gal and like the free one well enough to keep my money in my pocket.

I'm too old for this, I think!
Anything beyond MS Photo Manager totally confounds me.
I have no grasp of the concept "layers" as it applies to photos.
I just one a simple way to create a single "image" made up of 2 or more images side by side (or in a grid).
Teach me to do that and I'll be really happy.

I'm going to check out photofiltre, but I'm also going to bet I won't be able to do what I want with it any easier than with PhotoShop or others. Why can't they just have a command for dummies: "Multi-Image Photo"?

Potagere,
You could try Picasa from Google. It is completely free and very user friendly. You can do simple composites, and it is a great, simple to use photo editor.

Potagere,

I will get to work on that article and have screen shots to go with it, just like this article has. It's easier to READ when it's all laid out, than it would be for me to tell you here. So watch for that article, coming soon to a Dave's Garden near you! :-) Thanks for the inspiration for the article.

Good Deal! So glad that it works for you. Though I don't use it, I will remember to add Picasa to my photo editing recommendations in the article.

Where's Beaumont in relation to Houston & Austin?
Will be in both places in late September-early October.

Beaumont is about 80 miles east of Houston towards Louisiana. We're about 250 miles Southeast from Austin. Both towns are great if you like BIG TOWNS, but I don't care for the driving in Houston.

If you head toward Beaumont, let me know. We can get together for some coffee. I'll send you back to France with all kinds of plants. :-)

I can fire up the grill. No problem as long as you give me plenty of notice to take something out of the freezer.

I'm sure your article will help a lot of digitally challenged DG'ers. There is one tip you might add. If your digital camera has a 3 or more megapixel image (as most cameras that are not cellphones do nowadays), that is much more resolution than is needed to display on most computer screens, which takes more of the storage Dave is paying for, and takes longer to download, especially if you have a dial up modem.

The solution is simple. Use any graphic program (I use adobe, but there are lot's of free photo editors out there--Mac users get one with the operating system) to alter the resolution of your image. I generally cut mine down from 230 dots per inch to 110 or 115 dpi, thus reducing the image size and downloading time by 1/4.

Good thinking Don. I'm sure Dave would appreciate his site not having to work so hard to reduce the massive photos that can come from cameras.

I've got some plans for articles on how to resize photos and also to make combined photos like before and afters, and collages. I have 2 Sony Cameras and plan on showing how to reduce the size before the photos are even taken.

I've downloaded Picasa (available as a free download from Google) and am working on a tutorial for it (with screen shots) while I learn how to use it.

Thanks for your suggestion!

I have a Nikon Coolpix. Initially a friend gave me a Camida program to edit pictures and then i found Picaso which i like much better. When i want to upload a picture It comes from Camedia files and I can't upload from Picasa. I would like to delete the camedia and only use the Picasa but am afraid i will lose pictures and also not be able to up load. Any suggestions?

Also, how do i put a picture in my journal?

Hope someone can help.

Hi Maureen,

I've never used Camedia, so I can't answer specific questions about that one.

The photos you've downloaded are on your computer and will remain there, even when the editing software is removed from your computer.

I've been using Picasa recently and while Picasa "loads" up my own photos, so I can see them within that program, the photos themselves are within folders on my computer, and not part of the actual program.

As for loading the photos into your journal {I'm assuming you are referring to the journal here on Dave's}, it's just like uploading a photo within any of the forums on Dave's. Within the journal, under the text box, click on the BROWSE button to select the image from your computer.

I hope this helps.

Well, Gosh Maureen. Used to be there was a text box and a place to browse for your photos. It's been a while since I've made any entries in my Diary/blog. Now I can't find how to add the photos either. The only entries I've made into my JOURNAL have been when I run across something in PLANTFILES that I have, there is a link to add it to my journal.

I apologize, but I'm pretty stumped here. I hope someone else will come along and let us know how to add the photos to our journals.
