We purchased our 1982 Oregon home in January of 2008. We were told one of the 5 fruit trees is a cherry tree. I assumed a bing cherry but over the last week or so, the cherries started to rippen even though so small. I stopped at a roadside fruit stand to ask their advice on the type of tree and sure enough she said it is a cherry pie tree. I still wasn't sure until I read your article.
I did read another one that suggested clipping the cherries instead of picking them, it will produce better next year if clipped, have you ever heard that?
Thank you for the recipe and the pitting suggestion. I have the type pictured.
I'll follow-up after the pie is eaten!

I don't think there's any percentage in clipping off the fruits if they're ripening or close to ripening... with a young tree, sometimes it can be good to clip or pick off the fruit when it forms (still small and green) for the first couple of years, to let the tree save its energy for growth rather than use it for fruit production.

How lucky to move to a place with fruit trees in the yard! I hope you enjoy your cherry pie. "Pie cherries" make great jam, also! :-)
