The door is my own pattern. The window is a copy of a Tiffany window I found in a book.
Wash with a soft cloth and mild detergent. These paints are used for painting outdoor signs on metal and glass and by professional artists doing custom painting on show cars. They do not fade.
I kept a photo record of the different stages of the process. If you would like, I'll post it. :-) |

| OK...here goes.
Select your design in a book or from a photograph.
Scan it into your computer.
Drop the image into your Paintshop or Photoshop program, crop to the image and divide the photo into manageable grids. Make sure your pages can be scaled to print on standard 8 1/2 x 11 photo paper.
You can also go to this website, enter your picture and have it reduced to printable sized parts: http://www.blockposters.com/default.aspx Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Wow... when you do the sharpie drawing, does the sharpie stay or do you paint over the sharpie with black paint? Also, is your window facing the outside or the inside of the house.. is the side you painted out? I have a door that has several windows, one of the windows was hit by a rock from the weedwacker and is completely shattered but in place, it looks crackled, and, this door will be my first project (we were planning on putting in a doggie door with a whole new door, but if it looks good, it may just stay.
I'll take a photo of the door later. I really like vines, so that is most likely what will be my first attempt.
My paints, brushes and oil should get here this coming week by the end of the week hopefully.. ordered a couple of extra paints too.
By the way, try eating some a couple animal crackers it helps with acid reflux from all that coffee.. been there, done that..lol
and thank you so much for sharing your experience with us and the how to photos.. |

| The painting is on the inside. Use the lines of your sharpie as the "leading" and paint over them.
If you make a mistake, use mineral spirits to remove sharpie marks.
If you let the paint get a little runny, it looks like the veining in stained glass.
Also, remember, every layer of transparency makes the colors deeper.
Want frosted glass? Paint on your color, let it get a bit tacky, then dab with a soft cloth.
Old, cotton underwear is good...
Glad you enjoyed it. |

| Wow.
Question:
what do you think about pasting the photo on the back side of the glass and using the sharpie on the other side ---tracing it as opposed to doing it freehand and eye?
If the sharpie comes off with mineral spirits --it ought to be an easy erase once the other side is painted. |
gordo Gulfport, FL (Zone 9b)
July 06, 2008 07:22 PM Post #5214371
| Shading is done by layering transparancies.
The idea is to enlarge the design to fit, but if you make an exact size paper pattern and trace it on the inside, don't obliterate the pattern lines. They are painted black to simulate the leading. |

| Hi...this paint is solid stuff, made to last. It's used by professionals for doing artwork on slick surfaces. When it dries, it is on for good. Whenever you see lettering on a window, this is stuff. When you see murals on show vans and motorcycles, this is the stuff.
I really don't think it would enjoy being cooked, though. ;-)
Truly, it sticks well enough without any encouragement.
A little goes a long way. It comes in 1/4, 1/2 and full pints for black or white.
They also make nice metallics too, gold, silver, copper, brass, etc.
For those of you who decorate old jars or inexpensive second-hand store vases...this stuff could help you turn out first rate and durable fine art. Imagine using lapis blue with golds and silver...or emerald green with mauves and copper!
Its endless...have a ball! |

| cheryl, those look great.
Alcohol also takes sharpie off glass, would it be unadvisable to use it in this case?
I've been working on this and will definitely use some of the paints for this, painting the spokes for the wheels and also to paint the eagle.. (I just traced it onto plastic film).. I've got two frames that I'm doing... the mcycles are made out of resin, but I plant to glue them on the glass, then paint on the glass, have to place them different ways to see which way they look better.
this is the first time I try this, but needed some good glass paints, this is one of the frames. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Awesome job Gordo! Excellent instructions too.
My daughter made a stained glass portrait of the kids for her hubby for Father's Day using the glass paint. For an amateur, I think she did a pretty good job.
My sister scarfed up on about 20 tubes of the glass paint when our JoAnn's was moving and clearing out the old store. They were 70-80% off the original price. After my daughter did this project, my sister gave her all of those unopened tubes, along with faux leading, etc. giving her a rainbow of colors to work with on her next project.
I told daughter I'd like to have one of all 3 grand babies for myself. Maybe I'll get her to do it, or do it myself.

| gordo, I really love the painted glass that you've done!! Extremely well done!! I've always wanted to paint a "stained glass" accent strip across a couple windows of the front of my house. As a teenager, I painted my bedroom window and don't remember what kind of paint I used. My parents couldn't remove it when they went to sell the house either, lol. While the paint was wet, I threw either salt or sugar on it. It didn't melt much and created a really pleasing effect on the finish. I don't have the guts to experiment as an adult paying the mortgage, so would you venture a guess what I may have used? |

| There was a time when I was living on the proceeds from painting discarded liquor bottles I'd collected from behind the local bars. It got so all the bar patrons started leaving them on my doorstep, instead of my having to collect them up with my little red wagon each morning. Once they'd had a bath in the tub (the bottles - not the drunks), I used One Shot paints to paint French Provincial country scenes, flowers, whatever on them. Then, it was off to the flea market on the weekend. At 1.00 ea., I was able to make enough money for a few days groceries...
So, don't discount the local drunks. They're more than happy to keep you supplied, and its a good opportunity to meet people you might not have met had you not been a dedicated barfly. :-)
I owe those fellows more than a few meals... |

| The "house" I bought five years ago was a series of concrete walls or half-walls - some walls missing but footings showed where they were planned to go, no doors or windows or roofs. So it wasn't even a concret shell, just a half-shell.
Now I have several rooms with roofs, windows and floors. Recently got a concrete floor on the patio which may someday be a living room. MY friend Tony is back working for me and we sort of alternate between work on the house and work on the garden. The land is sandy and rocky. We sift it, use the dirt - amended with compost, fish scraps, seaweed, etc - for garden and the rocks for paths.
Doesn't leave much time for hooking.

Several years ago we bought many old windows at an auction with the intention of making a greenhouse which did not happen. Now I have a harbor freight greenhouse kit (which still may not happpen - LOL - but that is a different tale altogether) Anyway, this would be a wonderful way to put those windows to use.
Do they have a strong paint odor when you use them? I would like to have this as a winter project and it gets far below freezing here for months at a time. Not the type of weather where you want to have windows and doors open. |

| Yo Tetley! Those old windows would make great coffee tables. Take two, make them into a light box. Paint the panes on the top window with stained glass designs. Pop on a plexiglass top. Add a light fixture between the windows. Clean up some tree stumps and use them for your base (or glass blocks). Plug in and enjoy!
One Shot isn't too strong, but use a mask if you can't open the windows. |

So charming, great climate, lots of artists and interesting people who have left their old lives and started new ones south of the border. They live very inexpensively there, also. I think Social Security and a small pension, one could live quite comfortable. I always wonder about the hospitals and doctors there, though ..?? Would love to hear how you landed in that part of the world and more about your life there. Sandy |

| You can use dressmakers transfer paper. Comes in colors. Draw on the fron lightly, tape to the bottle, then use a pen to transfer (press hard).
The paint will cling to any slick surface, even marking pen.
Don't forget to post the finished product! |

I have used delta glass paints tho in the past and not this professional brand.
Might be worth a try for you.

| dahtzu, the class is a beginner class and it has 10 sessions. Also, they will start an intermediate class this month too so I plan to sign up. Tomorrow is the last session of the beginner class. Normally, you make a sun catcher in the beginner class (10 pces or less), I guess I don't count too well.. lol..
Digger, check with your local senior citizen center for classes, you never know what they have to offer. They also have ceramics, woodcarving, sewing, lapidary, etc.. I just can't take all of them (but want to, maybe if I live long enough). I do plan to sign up for the lapidary class if there is room. I'd like to slump glass, too bad they don't teach that here, they used to teach a little of the dichronic glass melting for jewelery, maybe they will do that sometime here. That glass is so expensive though, 18.00 for a small 4"x4" piece. |
