I have pulled out a couple of these and they don't "burn" me with their spines. I left this one to observe since it was not in the way of anything else. Is this some kind of nettle?

Looks like Solanum carolinense (or related species).

I think you are right...horsenettle, or solanum carolinense. Thank you for leading me in the right direction.
