I think I have a Malus Barndywine tree. I want to know if the fruit is harmful to animals.

Not harmful at all. In fact, it will one of the later fruits to be consumed.

That's why one of the reasons that the late Bob Simpson of Vincennes IN selected and named it, for the persistent fruit for winter display.

Speaking specifically of crabapple,my 70 year old husband has never passed a tree anywhere without grabbing a handful, even on golf courses and other places I fear they have been sprayed. Not everyoine finds them palatable raw,but they make wonderful jams, jellies, breads, etc.,much like other common plants like choke cherry.

Yep, crabapple jelly is delicious!

But leave some for the birds, too, they also need to eat.

Thank you all for your replies. I have 3 dogs that are my babies and I wated to make sure that the berries(fruit) were safe to eat! I have not seen the birds really eating them so I just wodered. You are right about them not dropping off the tree too!

Once again that you all!

You are so welcome and as Resin said always plant extra or leave enough for our birds and wildlife to eat. 'All Creatures Great And Small' .Lynn
