This has suddenly appeared in our pond this year and is very invasive although it appears to be a good place for small fish and frogs to hide. What is it and do we need to control it.
Ludwigia palustris, "Water Purselane". It is invasive on pond edges, but as you noted, is a good place for wildlife to hide.
If it is in the way, rake it out of the pond and toss it in a dry spot to dessicate. Otherwise, leave it for the critters.
Is this the same as what they call the Ludwigia palustris or Marsh purslane at [HYPERLINK@www.hear.org] ? It is confusing because it looks similar, but some references say that it is found mainly in Hawaii and that it flowers all season. We are far from Hawaii and have not seen any flowers. The following shows how it has covered the shallow inlet to our pond.
Ludwigia palustris is a weed in Hawai'i, invading any place (native forests and developed areas) that is wet.
It is indigenous to North & South America, Asia, and Europe.
Just before closing this thread, I just want to make sure that it is the Ludwigia palustris so I cut off a piece for a close-up photo. Does this confirm the ID?
