There is a talapia farm near me. I haven't seen the operation but own some property nearby and have followed some stories in the paper. The Dept. of Fish and Wildlife were very concerned from the beginning about them somehow getting loose. They mandated that all discharged water had to be filtered through a major amount of sand in an effort to trap and kill all the eggs.
The discharge goes into a small creek that goes under a public road about 1/4 mile downstream and then meanders into a bayou that goes to a river. People pile up at the bridge and the adjoining private property to catch talapia by the bucket full. At times the creek is only a foot deep and it looks like those photos of the salmon runs.
The Fish and Wildlife dept has poisoned and dynamited them to no avail. They multiply like crazy and destroy every native fish. A hard freeze kills them once in awhile.
They will eat commercial catfish food and get huge in a year. I don't believe it is possible to keep them contained because if nothing else, birds will scatter the eggs.
Freshwater prawns are more iffy but can be grown much further north and the $ is tremendous.
Crawfish are a major cash crop that can be grown almost anywhere there is water. I was very surprised to learn that they are a big deal even in Scandinavia.
Wild commercial fishing is almost extinct and getting worse every year. If you like seafood...might have to do it yourself.
Paul,
When I was in Lakeland several years back, I went to a 'fish farm' at a couples house.
On their property, they had several shallow, rectangle shaped ponds where they raised angel fish. They had alot of fish and a real nice set up.
I don't remember their names but they were on the west side of Lakeland.
I wish I could remember all the details.
I would like to do something like they had there...it would be ideal for fish and plants, both.

I don't expect that I will ever remember their names, Paul. The person that I went over there with, has gone and got himself thrown in prison, so I can't ask him who they are. He is the one who knew about them and took me over there.
Sorry :-(

Where...Bay County...Panama City is the county seat.
What...it is just a spot in the road, lots of woods, a couple little gas stations, feed store, post office, volunteer fire dept, a bunch of churches, a couple small nurseries, cactus and the lady that does all the brugs (I forget her name).
Not much goes on here...I like it that way. 32-35 miles from PC. Pert near at the Alabama line.
