The gourd shown in the pics is spot-on the size of MY "bigguns"!

Unfortunately, the seeds from MY beast don't seem to be viable... NOT ONE (that I've planted this year) has come up for me... ;-(

If you can't get over, call me and I'll pick them up. My MIL wants to go to the water plant place out your way on Friday so we could meet somewhere out there and save a few gas $$. Post #5601915

Okay, I need some gourd advice. The biggun made it through the hurricane. It is still attached to the vine, but the vine is brown and hollow, though not brittle. The gourd itself is forming mold and turning brown at the top. It's still heavy, and I am just crossing my fingers it will mature. There is a part on the side that might be collapsing but it's not soft at all so it might just be the way the gourd formed.

Is there any reason not to cut the vine and put the gourd in the garage to cure so I can make use of that raised bed? I'm trying to get a fall garden going and if there's no benefit to leaving it where it is, I'd like to move it.

ANY advice, suggestions, greatly appreciated!

Just before Christmas John told a friend to come see his gourds...and said to "bring that lady that bought all the seeds at the Farmer's Market"...

We went down to his house and looked at his BIG gourds...and lovely home...He asked me "which one of these would you like to have?" I said...OH! I can't afford any of them...He said..."who said anything about affording?"...and he GAVE me this lovely BIG gourd!!!

He has already scraped it but it is no where near dry...I hope it ages well./...I think I already see a little crack forming. Jo

I have grown them, It always been to hard for me to leave just one per vine..UNTILL this comming year..a friend is going to let me plant as many as I want out on his farm..I cant grow to many where I live cause they get ulgy for a while and I cant stand it! So I hope to grow ,Bushel,,bird house, swan,,dipper and snake..probally some of the little colorful ones..If anyone has more to reccommend,,Im open for suggestions..Dee

You shouldn't grow too many different kinds of gourds near each other...unless you want to get some interesting shapes when they cross pollinate.

What else do you do with your gourds besides making bird houses?

AND...Welcome to Dave's...You have hit on the best web site on the internet...you'll make lots of new friends here...I hope I will be numbered among them.

I grew bushels and bird house together,,maybe thats why the bird house gourds got so big?? WE had a wet year,,just thought I got lucky!! how far apart would be good? Feet or miles? Some day I would love to have the time to decorate them..I see them at craft fairs and I just drool. One more seed germinated this morning, so that is three total.

Now to keep them alive and happy all year. I'll grow them inside till May 10th or so, usually I think you can direct sow on Mother's day here. I use to in CA, but don't know for sure.

Also, looks like I've got some germination on my Devil's Claw seeds, only a couple so far, but it is looking good for the 3 six packs that I sowed.

Elfs, give it at least two to three weeks, they are still germinating here, today the 4th one is coming up. I still need two more and I think they are buried a little too deep, so it may take longer. I have mine now on a heating mat to try to get the last two to come up.

I soaked mine on March 19 and planted them on March 20. (16 days so far)

You soaked yours on 3/25, so give it at least another week or more.. at first I put them inside a plastic bag and blew air into it then tied it up for about a week in front of a sunny window, then let new air in every day for another week, now I took them out and put the ones that did not germinate on my heat mats for about 3 days now and one more sprouted today.

These are big seeds too, so the seedcoat is also harder and thicker, thus take longer to germinate. Hopefully what I posted above will help some, I am in a hurry too, to get them going, but, it has been so windy here, that they will be inside my house for about 1 month.

I put mine into large 20oz styrofoam cups so that I just have to cut the bottom and sides when I transplant.. I'm hoping that will work.

Syrumani, My daugher and family lives in San Antonio. She works at the Babtist hospital and is Director of the Chemo unit there. I am giving the African Gourd to my son-in-law for being such a wonderful husband and father but I refuse to send it, they have to come and visit me to get it. They should have picked it up when we lived in Tombstone, AZ. Now they have a longer trip to go. This is the gourd that they are getting. Many of you have already seen this gourd.
As far as shipping goes, just put them in a bigger box then the gourd and pack it full of peanust or the like. I have had many shipped to me that way. Gourd just sent me four wonderful gourds.
Thanks again gourd. I am taking them to a freind that has a maching that kind of sand blasts them and leaves them in a perfect state to do what ever you want to them. I am going to apply minwax and then do some beading on them. I am not going to cover the entire gourd so by putting the minwax on the uncovered areas will be just as nice.

Well, I transplanted all four of mine yesterday afternoon and they look great. I've got them covered with shadecloth and buckets till they get going, it is supposed to be a hot one today.. will report more as they grow.. I did loose all my zuccinni plants though. Time to direct sow those.

The other two seeds never came up, maybe they still will so I'm saving the containers they are in.

Anyone else still have some going? My devils claws are still doing well, I need to transplant them also, but haven't got a clue where they will go. I don't know if they climb or what?

taters, make sure you cover them up with some thing, also, if they are still small, try feeding them very diluted fish emulsion and feed thru the bottom, not the top, let the roots do the drinking.. sometimes, I even misted mine, they had been sitting under a tree for a couple of weeks now, so they are acclimated somewhat. some days they got full sun too.

I have two seedlings that are starting to send out the curly-dealies . . . just like the luffa gourds and the zucchini's . . . I will take those to my mother's place on Saturday, to get them all planted. Let us know about the devils claw plants, too, A - if they vine or not, etc.

Devil's Claw has a very pretty bloom...and they spread on the ground...like the Sacred Datura...vines...but no trellis...they are a wild plant.

Gourd, you give me a report on what kind you have...if the blooms are different also. Thanks. Jo

I made 4 -100',, seed rows, at a friends farm,,,and the temps just arent high enough..i hope Im just being impatient. its been 13 days, and nothing popping up yet...thank- goodness I have more seed, just incase I need to replant! I learned so much this year in my glass house..learned I shouldnt start things so early,,and I need vents in glass house so things dont burn up..thank you for the seeds,,its been fun! Dee

Thanks Jo,
I've got the three types of Devils Claw going, I just have to transplant the seedlings, they look good. They do all look the same. So I better not mix my labels. My gourd plants are doing great, it has been hot here, I try to cover them some in the afternoons, but they don't seem to need it.. I think by them being acclimated for a couple of weeks outside helped tremendously. Now I just have to make sure they get enough water while they grow.

Hey guys,
These gourds are really ugly (but beautiful) just about now, they got mold, brown stuff, and a couple are peeling. I'll take photos after it stops raining here. Some are losing weight and are starting to dry.

Did anyone else get some of these giants going? I got about 7 giants and two medium ones... can't move them yet, they are still heavy as all heck.

Hopefully the two medium ones will be dry enough to get seeds out before May...

Hi nicole, these things are huge!!! and they do need LOTS of water.. I used some organic fertilizer once a week around the roots to make sure they got bigger.. save all the rinsing water if you can, I'm wondering which other ways we can get/save water. This year I'll grow some in the ground and keep some in the raised beds too. Let me know if you need seeds, these should have plenty in them. I'm not going to open them all up, only on or two, the rest will be for staining and carving if possible, unless I crack them and have to make an open design on them.

Greg was just there last week for a week with his mother and brothers. She is 87 now and wanted to spend some time with all of her sons at the same time while she is still healthy and able to enjoy all of them together. It had been 40 years since they were all together at the same time. Way too long.
I couldn't go because I needed to stay with the kids.
