About mid-June I found this as a tiny plant growing in my vegetable garden. In infancy it looked like it might have been another tomato plant that had managed to survive the winter. But then it turned into a vine, and the leaves are definitely not tomato. The stems are hairy, almost like velcro, and it took no time at all for it to cling to the bamboo stake that I gave it. I think I need to pull it, but before I do I want to make sure it isn't good. We got quite a few volunteer plants from our compost pile, as we learned over the first year of composting what not to throw in the pile.
Can somebody tell me what this is?

Looks like hops, Humulus lupulus.

I'm not sure after studying the DG pics. The leaves on the Hops vines don't exactly look like these. These seem to have more "fingers" and hops look to have three per leaf.

Yes, I expected that comment - leaves on Humulus lupulus have 3-7 "fingers" depending on the maturity of the leaf/where it is on the plant.

Well, you certainly seem very sure. Every single one of the leaves on this single stalk vine are exactly the same without any variation. (The other leaves in the background are my beans) If it is hops, then out it comes. I don't do any microbrewing and don't need that vine taking over everything. Thanks for the help.

You seem a little uncertain (understandably)... If it helps, here's a photo of our hops - they get to be massive and are quite invasive (suckering), with bristly, clingy stems; note the variation in leaf "fingers", from 3 on new growth to 7 on old stems:

Those do look like hops. I am growing 17 different varieties this year and some do have more than 3 leaf sections. They twist around your bamboo or wood dowel supports just like a hop bine (vine) would.

They make a lovely vine-like plant that doesn't dig into rock and brick like a true vine would. They can eventually cover lattice work and can make for good shade if they are allowed to cover over an overhead grid of some sort.

If you don't want the plant, you will need to use a systemic weed killer like roundup while protecting your other plants. While this plant is desired by many, it is tenacious like a weed (which can be good or bad, depending on whether you want it there or not).

Thanks to you all. I have pulled out the vine. It was a very new/young plant, and had only a small amount of roots that had not yet sent out any runners. I am pretty sure I got it all, but I will definitely keep an eye on the area to make sure.
