I planted this from direct sowing seed and thought it died (threw away the packet) but a few years later it came back and is now thriving. No I don't think it is Cosmos it must be a perennial every year it comes back better and is only 5 to 6 inches tall. I had about 3 small blossoms early early on this season and when the blossoms fall which by the way are blue and very very hairy or wispy looking (along with the foliage), a green and brownish stripped like pod forms (I am assuming it is a seed pod). I will send a better picture when what looks like buds on it now become the small blue flowers.
Thank you so much ecrane3 actually I was expecting that you were going to be the one that was going to figure out the mystery. Now just because I say that don't go feeling like I am making fun of you, I just really mean that from some of the other threads I have read you seem to know your plants. But why is it that they come up better and better every year if they are annuals. I have stayed away from annuals just because I don't want to have to plant them every year and low and behold I must have planted one not knowing. I also wonder if on the pkg they were listed as a perennial because normally I only buy what says perennial. And how best can I share them because I have tried digging them up and they just end up dying in the pot on me. Second if you could only figure out what my other plant that I posted the picture of is that looks like garlic or are you working on that one still.
Some annuals reseed, so that could be why they're coming back. Or it might be something other than Nigella, without seeing the flowers I can't be 100% positive. Your description of the flowers and seeds matches Nigella, but maybe there are other things that would be a match too. If you get some more flowers, make sure and post a picture and then someone can tell you for sure. If it is Nigella, the best way to share it would be to collect some seeds and share those.
Your other one doesn't look like garlic to me, but whatever it is, it's not something I'm familiar with so I have no suggestions unfortunately. If nobody else around here knows, your best bet is to post on the Plant and Tree Identification forum, that's the place where you'll get the fastest answers on unknown plants. A lot of the people there who really know their plants don't always make it over here.
I looked at the link on PlantFiles for the Nigella and it looks like what I have so you are probably right its just that I don't usually buy anuals so this must be a very good self seeder or I'm very lucky one of the 2. I also wonder if for some reason they would have listed it as a perennial. I will have to go to the other link with the other plant because I have not a clue what it is except that my Mother-in-law once had some wild garlic and I wonder if I planted some and forgot that I did it. But that would have been a long time ago and she doesn't even live in that house anymore so I can't go and look at what was planted there.
Plants are frequently mislabeled, so it wouldn't surprise me if you got a packet of Nigella that was labeled as a perennial, or the other possibility is that the seed packet was supposed to be something else entirely and they had the wrong seeds in the packet. Happens all the time!
