I have a set of collector plates that were given to me when my children were little. I haven't had them up for years, but would like to put them up in the room my granddaughters use when they stay here, so pulled them out the other day. The metal plate holders were stored with them and one has left a small rust stain on the surface of one of the plates. I was afraid of using a comercial rust remover for fear it would also remove the paint on the plate. Does anyone know of a gentle way to remove rust? It's really pretty small, so I'd rather leave it than ruin the picture underneath it, if I have no other choice.

I've heard of lemon juice and sunlight , also peroxide and sunlight. Maybe one of those painted on the spot with a q-tip would do it.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try the lemon juice and look for the Barkeepers' Friend in case it doesn't work. Thanks for the tips.

It's Mr. Clean brand, it's sort of like a sponge except it cleans a LOT better. It comes in a little square box and when I see it at the store it's either by the cleaners or by the sponges (a lot of stores those are in the same aisle though!)

I forgot to mention that I think there are a couple store brand magic erasers too but I don't know if they work as well, I've only ever used the Mr. Clean one.

The dollar store has them. So far as I can tell there is no difference between those and Mr. Clean.

I haven't got them to work on a bad rust stain though.

If none of those work try a gun cleaning/protecting oil. I can't remember what brand the military used but I had some at one point and used it on my metal security door to remove the rust. I know it sounds funny but if it doesn't work all you do is wipe the oil off.

I would sure try the Magic Eraser first though! It got some pretty tough permanent marker off of a painted door for me! No damage to the paint!

My failsafe rust remover is called lemi-shine. Its an additive for the dishwasher to remove lime scale and rust. I've used it on clothing to remove rust stains and just about everything else. It's really just concentrated citric acid. It comes as a powder so you could probably just mix a little with water and apply with a q tip. I'd still try it in a hidden spot if you can to make sure it won't ruin the plate, but as "chemicals" go, citric acid is pretty mild.

I have a powdered citric acid to add to jellies made with fruit that oxidizes...do you think that would be the same? I might try a bit gingerly and see what happens. Thanks for all the tips everyone. I'm going to town tomorrow to look for Magic Erasers. Sounds like even if I don't need one for this they would be a good thing to have on hand.
