At my sister's new house, we discovered two bushes with beautiful purple foliage. It reminds me of a purple velvet plant in that you can see the green through the purple, and the underside is more purple. I have scanned the leaves since I didn't get a picture of the bush. Both bushes were about 3 foot tall, and are living in zone 5. Haven't noticed if it bloomed in the spring or anything. I have searched and searched for this bush, and can't find it anywhere. Any ideas? I've taken cuttings from it because I loved it so much. Now both my sister and I would like to know what the heck they are! Any help or being pointed in the right direction would be appreciated! The leaves are a serrated. This one is a little mangled, the leaf on the left has two notches taken out of it...that's not the serration.

It looks a bit like Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate', a purple leaf form of Joe Pye Weed.

That looks like it! I guess it will bloom late summer, so I'll have my sister on watch for white flowers. Thanks! You're pretty good!

I was kind of joking. It's actually part of my job to ID plants for people and I often have to do it with only a poor description, a poor sample or, on a good day, both :)
