I planted double Knockout roses in front of hollies; the tags on both say they grow to 4'. My strategy is to prune the knockouts to about 2 1/2 to 3 ft to keep them at a lower level than the hollies. Is this possible without damaging the roses? Thanks!
Yes,it's possible,but it requires very frequent and careful pruning.If you prune too heavily you will sacrifice a lot of blooms.You could cut off spent blooms down to the second good branch rather than the first,for example,Shrub roses don't require much pruning or deadheading,so you will need to be very careful to keep their natural shape.Lynn
You might want to look into other landscape roses.Many grow lower than 4 feet and require minimal care.The main thing is to find the qualities and colors you want in a plant that is reliably hardy in your zone.I'm guessing you may be in zone 5,which is borderline for some,but works well for many.Lynn
