| Hello, This one came up in a new flowerbed this spring. It's about 20" tall so far. It has a robust, woody stalk where it comes out of the ground. I've been to the Forest Service, but several of them could not identify it. Tree or shrub?????? I'm located in the interior of British Columbia.
Thanks, Bill Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I am shocked that your Forest Service couldn't ID this one. It's a maple seedling (Acer) of some kind. I'm not familiar with the northern species so I can't narrow it down any further but it is definitely a maple. |

| Really? The overall texture reminds me of A. rubrum although the shape is clearly different. But A. macrophyllum doesn't have that pronounced middle lobe either. I'm sure you'll come back with a few links to back yourself up and make me look like a dummy but I like the abuse, so bring it >:) |

| Hello, Acer macrophyllum is also known as "Big Leaf Maple" . [HYPERLINK@www.for.gov.bc.ca]
Doesn't really look like my plant.
I just found out that this plant was actually a wee little fellow that was attached to a small shrub my wife bought this spring.
This info shouldn't really affect identifing it I don't think,,,but what do I know? I'm not a plantatoligist. heh.
I have surfed all over the "internet tubes" and spent an hour in the library with 2 librarians and still no luck...
I do appreciate your help and I love the site...sure is a busy one!
thanks again, Bill |

| Bear in mind that maple seedlings have smaller and different shape leaves to those on adult trees, with less pronounced, and fewer, lobes. That this has three fairly prominent lobes now, means it will have five very prominent lobes when mature; their shape is consistent with A. macrophyllum too.
Also Acer macrophyllum is the local common maple in BC.

| Resin-I don't think A.macrophyllum grows in the interior, just on the coast.I can't find what maple would be native to that area, though. |

| I think Resin just may be right. I finally found a photo of somrthing that looks like our subject.
It's part way down the attached page below...
The attached page links from Marietta College in Ohio...
The smaller leaves look pretty darn close to the subjects leaves...what say???
It is not native to my area..It is native several hundred miles west of me towards the Pacific.
As I said earlier it hitchhiked with another shrub so I guess the nursery where they came from must have been on the lower mainland (southwest coast).

| Resin is right 99.9% of the time which is what makes him so lovable and so darned irritating at the same time :) That rounded lobing does look like the lobing of A. macrophllum. I guess you win again, buddy. |
