Hello all,

I would like your help identifying this volunteer. It started growing in between two shrubs and I liked the shape and feel of the leaves so I let it stay. They are sort of fuzzy for lack of a better adjective.

This plant grew rather tall (about 5') and reached that height rather quickly.

Well, when the monsoons started, this plant sadly became a casualty. I found it one morning broken in two. The break occurred at the base of the plant and though I tried to get it going, it just turned brown and well, that was that.

I allowed the blooms to dry out but I am rather certain there are no viable seeds. So, I ask you all for your help as I loved the flowers on this wonderful volunteer!

Mexican sunflower, Tithonia ssp., probably Tithonia rotundifolia.

Those are great butterfly flowers. There's the tall version which sounds like what you had and there's a shorter version which stays upright better and doesn't get so beat up in the wind. They are real easy to grow. That's one of the flowers I always let my granddaughter plant in her little garden.

Wow, that was quick! How wonderful, I have that on my wish list. I guess some bird somewhere along the way read this list and planted it for me. I am very grateful to you altagardener. I can now get tons of seeds for this and plant them in clusters so they don't fall.

Hi NatureLover, I did notice a few butterflies before it met its tragic demise. I will plant a bunch of these in the spring. I will plant the short version as well. If I plant them both together, that will look quite good I think!

Thanking both of you and wishing you the very best.

Take care!
