I live smack in the middle of New Mexico (East Mountain area) and I was very happy to read an article from my neck of the woods :0) I moved here a year ago from Michigan and I can certainly relate to the garden woes here in NM. I've joined my local garden club and started an online garden group to get the best advice for growing here. Raised beds, amended soil and xeriscape or native plants are the best way to go. I can also relate to your dad not wanting to go back east. I absolutely love New Mexico! Bring on the winds and the drought - you can keep your humidity. The people are fabulous and the open space and mountains are amazing! Tell your dad I will plant some Tarragon for him and keep writing.
I remember a party Dad had - this is Fred and Susan, they're from NYC, this is Tim and Sue, they're from Boston, this is Carol, she's from LA, this is JoAnne, she's from Lansing Michigan, this is Andy, from Detroit, and this is Robin, from Phoenix. LOL. Is anyone in New Mexico actually from New Mexico? Thanks for writing.
Nice article. Since you wonder--yes many of us are from NM. I am actually a native New Mexican coming from a large family of natives. My great grandfather came here when NM was still a territory. I love the dry air and we have always grown roses. I recall my Grandmother's throwing their dishwashing water out the back door onto their roses when I was a small child. I have lived in other states, but never gardened anyplace but southern New Mexico. You might enjoy my garden photos here that show you can grow roses and many things in NM if you have the desire.
Cactuspatch, you probably don't remember, but I have seen your rose photos before! When I was collecting pictures for my article on The Secret Garden, I was amazed by them! I knew there had to be somebody from New Mexico. Thanks for writing.
As long as they get enough water, right? I now know he had already had a smaller stroke when he stopped gardening in NM. Tarragon could have kept growing w/out extra water, for instance. The first stroke muddled his thinking, the second, big one, paralyzed his body. None of us were out there with him, so when he said "oh, I don't do that any more" we accepted it.
Of course, we water everything in NM. I never knew one could garden without watering. Watering was what got me to love gardens, I was the designated waterer for my Dad!
lol, here we pour out the excess water that has collected in our pots! I'll never forget the time my friend in California was talking about watering her daylilies. I was shocked! You have to WATER daylilies out there?
