Hello,
I originally posted this on the Back Porch, and was directed to this forum. I didn't turn anything into a treasure - yet.. but I found a treasure to me..

So I recently moved from southern FL to northern CA. wow - what a great decision - but that's a whole other story.

In the move we got rid of a lot of stuff. And I vowed to myself that when I needed something (or wanted) for that matter I would try and buy it second hand.

I have been wanting a new teapot. One that has a harmonic whistle - and not the usual whistle. I've priced them online and they can be $70 and above. Gasp for a teapot?

anyway.. on Sunday while leisurely browsing the local flea market - what did I find? Whoa... that $70 teapot for SEVEN dollars. Almost brand new.. [happy dance]

I just love those great finds... to the guy selling it, it was just a teapot - to me... it was a TREASURE (well worth the wait to find it)..

Tell me bout you best finds at the flea market, swaps and yard sales..

Also found a very pretty decorative pillow for $2 (price tag was still on it... $49)

Ya gotta love it!

Can't remember when I bought anything "new", love to find great buys at a thrift store. Well, I shouldn't say can't remember when because I bought a couple things at the Dollar Tree Store for making some treasures. Great buy on the tea pot.

I saw a small dresser I liked and couldn't make up my mind, so waited until the next week and it was gone. It was such a good dresser, one of the better made ones. Watching a Madonna and child bust for price to go down. Started out at $29 and several weeks later it was $19, but still too much because of the shape she was in. Months later still $19, but I won't pay that much so have to wait or give up my quest. Sometimes you really get lucky.

Last week at a community flea market I got a Salvatore Farrigamo leather handbag for $2. It is in like-new condition, seems authentic, and the owner told me it was worth $500. She may have exaggerated but I know they ARE valuable. Her aunt had bought it for her, so apparently she never used it so sold it. My gain!

I *had* some original designer's drawings of mardi gras gowns from New Orleans (from the 30's) that I bought for $5 each at a yard sale but sold them when I found out they were worth a small fortune. Sadly I only had 3 when I could have bought a whole box of them. They went to a collector who will appreciate and take better care of them than I ever would. The yard sale was in an area that was hit hard by Katrina so I feel good that these have been preserved for future generations.
I have several older Mardi Gras posters also found over the years in great condition. People don't realize how much they can be worth. My favorite is an original that the screeners used to copy the mass produced posters from. I also have a large Ron Picou serigraph that I found for $20 at a thrift store. I was shocked since I knew how much I paid for one that was much smaller in a store. Here's his work http://www.ronpicou.com/ronny.html Spring tide is the one I found.
I have a lot of art work by unknown artists too. If I like it and it is an actual painting (not a print) I get it.

I also find some neat treasures, gosh, one that I lug around is a painting of a Monk, you can tell it is by a beginner, it almost looks by the numbers painting, but it has the neatest rounded columns and bougie growing in an out of the porch... I really like the stucco effect.

this is not a big find but i wonder if anyone else has this experience--if i or someone else needs something it seems i have a great chance of seeing it at the next garage sale! an example was a friend telling me she was so sad because she broke the lid to her crock pot ---honest to goodness i saw a crock pot lid at a garage sale the next weekend and put it on her porch! so friends would kid that i should be a personal buyer at garage sales!!

This thread has gotten me remembering...DH and I both come from "thrifty" families. I was very proud that my Grampa worked on a trash truck when I was a kid ("PLEASE just tell people he works for the city", my mom used to say). This was in the days before crushers, of course. He used to bring home the best stuff, most of which ended up in my Grandma's basement. When she died, I begged my mom to keep three chairs for me that he'd brought home, and she VERY reluctantly did. They have a place of honor in my house, and are probably valuable antiques now!~

My FIL used to walk every morning, and on trash days he would bring home neighbors' discards. Although we had to fill a 40 yard dumpster twice after he died to get rid of the real junk he had collected, there were some treasures. The four light fixtures in our courtyard, along with a big brass tray that I use as a tabletop came from his "trove"...

When I was a kid, every weekend, my mother would drag me to the yard sales, as a kid it was a pain, but now as an adult, I look back so fondly on those crazy weekends. And when I do find a great find at a yard sale I can sort of feel close to my mom. silly I know.. I can hear her cheering me on.

While taking a break from organizing our shed room, I thought I would
pop into Dave's to see what was new.

How funny to find this very thread, you'll never believe what I bought today
at a yard sale!

First let me explain that our kids are now older, and as a result, we had a pool
table in my husband's bedroom that was never used. After we finally found a home
for it, this left room for my workout equipment. Last night I dragged it out, oiled
it and am glad to have it back again.

So this morning I drifted / coasted / slipped (okay, so I planned to go)
by a couple of yard sales and what did I find? A lady getting rid of what appeared
to be enough equipment to stock a small gym. The stuff is in fabulous shape, all clean.

1.) Life Rider Plus by Health Rider
2.) Stamina 4655 Recumbent Air Bike
3.) Stamina 890 Air Bike
4.) Total Gym 1000
5.) Lifestyler Folding Stepper
6.) Rock & Tone
7.) Ab Bench Plus Marcy Impex
8.) Tilt & Tone
9.) Weights
10.) Gym equipment mat
11.) Another piece I can't figure out. LOL.
12.) Brand new, never used Polar heart rate monitor

Not only is everything in great shape, but once I put batteries into the electronics
and put them on correctly (they were backwards) everything has timers and other
measurement readings. How fast you are pedaling, how many miles you've biked,
etc.

Just about a month ago I was looking at treadmills, but even on sale they were
still hundreds of dollars. I didn't want to end up using the mill as a coat rack, so
I thought about it.

But today, there wasn't time to think. As I examined one of the pieces, willing to
pay the $25.00 price tag, the lady came over and basically made me an offer I
could not pass up. She started by saying that I could take everything for a hundred
bucks. I stammered, not because of the price, but considering what my husband
would say if I bought it all. "Ninety" then "Eighty", followed by "Seventy dollars for
everything."

Good grief, one piece alone was well worth a hundred, but if you insist. I bought
every stick of it - all twelve items / exercise equipment AND eight tall shelving
units for the shop AND a wooden settee for two with cushions and end tables...
AND a four shelf wooden corner unit - every bit of this for $91.00. And this stuff
isn't junk or even close to it.

Normally, ten bucks will make me happy as can be at a yard sale. But this one
took every bit of my money and was well worth it.

Now to figure out which one I like best, so far bouncing from piece to piece every
so many minutes is fun.

Whooo hooo!

KM

My wife often stops at garage sales and when she returns home and shows me what she found I always say "Well, that's nice, but did you get ME anything wonderful?" It's kind of a running gag and I've been doing it for 15-20 years. Well, a couple of months ago she finally did it. She came home lugging a massive tackle box filled to overflowing with mostly new high end fishing tackle. I figure there has to be $400 to $500 dollars worth of gear in there. They were asking $25 for it. She offered and got it for $20. It was worth the wait!

What a bunch of trashy people :P Last month we passed by a treadmill by the road and I made my husband stop for it. There was a lot of grumbling from him about how there was no way it was going to work. (Wuvie, I too never wanted to buy one because of the clothes rack fear). In his defense he did have to open it up and do a little work because there was no key to make it run. Otherwise, it works fine and even has an incline feature. Trashiness is good thing around here.

Not my best yard saling day ever but yesterday I stopped at a yard sale close to the house. LOADS of clothes for my youngest daughter - all brand names and in excellent condition. For $10 I bought her a gorgeous new winter coat, a pretty purple rain jacket, about 7 outfits, a beautiful dress, a pair of shoes that were never worn, unopened seed packets - phlox, marigold and sunflowers, plus an unopened box of 30 Jobe's plant food spikes. I know there are a few things I am forgetting, but I am considering going back today and asking if she will sell the remainder of the clothes for one price. DD is fascinated by clothes - when she is grown I can see her being a fashion designer.

There was a garage sale down the street from me some time ago and it was wild. Clothes hanging on rack after rack and tags still on them. She had to be struggling w/ some kind of compulsive-shopping @ high end stores. Wrong size for me or my daughter. I should have put a tracking-device on her so when she grew from a size 6 to something bigger I could find her bigger size garage-sales.

Loved reading this thread...loved the teakettle that started it. That tackle box find is a score and so is the exercise eqipment!

I found a green bench (seen somewhere on this forum) sitting by the road for bulk trash pickup. Love it!!

Our Goodwill prices have skyrocketed. Funiture is still a good bargain but home things are high. The potting section is higher than Walmart...so I need to be careful.

I look for the blue/clear mexican glassware all the time but find garage sales are a better deal.

I passed a neighbor's house with a round, metal mesh patio table and four arm chairs down at the end of the driveway. I walked back (they are just a few houses away) to take a look and asked my neighbor if he was throwing them out. He said he probably should sell them, but didn't want to be bothered so they were all mine if I wanted them. He then came down with cushions for the chairs (didn't even look used) that he just hadn't gotten down to the curb yet - all for free! Another time I got a Reed & Barton contemporary silver candy dish with enamel interior for $8 at a yard sale. Also got one of those wrought iron (steel?) sewing machine bases with the original wooden top for $9 at a flea market. I know there are others, but those are some of my best.

I never think of having garage sales, I simply put any articles I want to dispose of out at the roadside and people just take them...we usually have big object pick up one a year and what treasures you find however they no longer after this year will have it..many will be disappointed..that's why I think we are finding people more and more putting things out...

The only thing that was wrong with 2 chairs and the table it the back runner on the bottom of the back was cracked, took it off, made a new one and voila..useable chairs for the DG garden...also been using scrap wood found near the dumpster at the restaurant to do the name and mileage markers for each of my friends to display in DG Friendship Garden...guess we must always be on the lookout...found an old glass lamp as well, just needs rewiring and I can so see a nice stained glass shade on it - victorian looking...

About 2 months ago we found this neat looking item in thrift store for $19 less my 20%. Wondered what it was until DH discovered it was a wine bottle opener. Stood on its own stand and had an antique look to it. Picked it up for sister-in-law, looked brand new. I looked it up in the Internet and found it for sales price of $120. What an interesting thread! Have to tell about my DGD who is 9 yrs old. There was a garage sale next door to her house over the Labor Day weekend. She spotted a cute little outfit (her size) and it was two dollars. She only had one dollar. I told her to go ask the lady if she could take less for it. DGD was apalled that I would suggest such a thing...lol. I told her how it works with garage sales and bartering...and that it was fine to do that. She didn't think much of the idea though. Anyway..we went on to some other sales, and when we returned, she came running up to us with the outfit! I asked her how she got it. She replied that she waited on the lady to leave, and then asked the Man if HE could take less for it...hahahaa!!! That's my girl!!! She is learning!!

DH when he was alive would always barter guess that's why I didn't have to learn to do so..remember downtown Toronto there was a fruit/vegetable market and there were tomatoes on sale - let's say one basket was $1.98 lb. then another $2.39 lb. and all I could remember Roger arguing with the sales clerk is a lb. is a lb. why the difference???? and wouldn't leave till he got the lb. for $1.98 needless to say I was long gone..shaking my head...

I can barter for MOST things but I have NEVER bartered for a horse in my life! If I WANT IT, I will pay the price. If I don't want the horse, no amount of bargaining will convince me to buy it!

The FIRST time I remember bartering, I bartered was with my Grandpa. He offered me a saddle for $100. I said that was TOO high. He said $75, I said still too much... "Ok, $50." "ALMOST but still too high" "$37 and how did you know what I paid for it!"

When I was a teen (a LONG time ago) he had a little pinto part Welch mare for sale. It was only $50 but he didn't have a buyer. I said I could sell her for more than that! He said if I could sell her for more, I could keep the difference. 2 weeks later, after I rode her a little and advertised her, I sold her for $100.

omg ! i fell into a great deal . several years ago , i met a couple that was having a hard time . they had pets and couldn't afford to spay / neuter . i was with the local humane society and what strings i couldn't pull , i took the dogs and cats to my vet and told him to please let them have credit , i would stand behind them if they missed a payment . well , it comes home , my friend worked for the county , and had major health issues , forcing him to take the job driving the garbage truck , about all he could physically do . long story , but he is keeping all the red , blue , golden , and green wine bottles for me . that's a treasure for me , i'm getting into mosaics as soon as i have a supply , and a bottle tree , and run lights in them along a path ,and glass painting and , and and and ! . i think i hit the jackpot . sally

I have found many great things at yard sales, and one of the things I really liked is this beautiful lamp shade. One of those things just gotta have then get it home and have no use for it. Actually I have used it in my flower garden for awhile but got concerned about the heat on the seams. Now it is another treasure in the garage without a purpose...yet.

wow that lamp shade is a find! Is it real stained glass or plastic? If you don't want to keep it as a lamp, what about removing the fixture part, turning it upside down and using it as a planter? Better to use and enjoy than sat hi to it in the garage!

I did this...the water comes right out the hole. But you can just place a pot in there also.

My garage sale find was a 1951 Singer Centennial sewing machine - it's in the original cabinet with all of the accessories. I picked it up for $20 and took the machine to a repairman to have it cleaned up. For $60 it was cleaned, an original light fixture was put back on, the tensioner was replaced, and it's humming like new. So for $80 I have a working machine that's worth far more. From what he said, the table alone is worth $150-200! I just finished piecing a quilt with it last night - it sews like a dream and the stitch is perfect. Not to mention it's just so pretty with all the gold on glossy black. Much prettier than my newer machine. :o)

Digger - the one I 'found' was a 99, so it doesn't sew in reverse. But the Featherweight 221 I have does - and that one's portable. I think they're perfect for piecing quilts because I don't lock the stitch anyway, but if I'm doing garment stitching, the Featherweight is better because of the reverse.

Boo - the repair guy that freshened up the 99 had to sit down when I told him how much I paid for it. After getting it all cleaned up he was kidding around and asking if I wanted to sell it. I told him no for now, thinking I might not like sewing on it. Wrong answer! It's too kewl.

Gotta love garage sales! I just started browsing them in the past few years. The other find was a set of Pfaltzgraf dishes (complete set of 4, current pattern with plants & herbs on them) for $5. They'll be a good set for my son when he moves out in a few years. Or maybe I'll just give him mine and keep those! LOL!

I can't enjoy it if it is sitting in the box. Don't want to hang it outside so it can get broken. Hey Samigal...according to Wikipedia ...Eaves or Soffet lining on a house-the flat section (underside) would be referred to as a soffit.
Eaves is the word I know and have always been told, not soffet. Maybe thats a different part of the country word that people use. I was raised next door to you, in Downey, and I don't remember people talking about soffits, but I remember my Dad talking about painting the eaves.

Somersetsue, ah I've learned something new today. We refer to them as eaves or faisha board. Don't think apples will go on mine after all, DH would probably put a halt to that. Better leave them as is, white.

I've just discovered I had some neat books for doing crafts. Bought them years ago, out of sight out of mind. "Decorating your garden" "Painting houses cottages & towns on rocks" and "Crafts in a Flash". I should have gone hunting amond my books when my imagination quits working. Betty keep them in plain sight now. I better keep on looking and may find some other great works I completely forgot about.

I don't know if its regional or what but in my neck of the woods & according to my husband who is construction, the eaves are under the edge of the roof. That part you have to pratically stand on your head to paint with cricked neck. The soffit is the sheetrocked area above the upper cabinets. In some kitchens the area is left open to set stuff on (so no soffit). In some kitchens the cabinets begin all the way at the ceiling.

Amazing the things we can rediscover when we stroll thru our old books! I need to do that too!

I got another free wooden ladder yesterday from craigslist. This one is just 4 tall (I have 2 earlier ones that are 6 foot and were FREE) . Not sure what color I'm painting it and where it's going in the garden but that's its new home! My landscaping is very "young" and there were only 3 things here & mature when I got here so the ladders, treslis & birdhouses on BIG posts help give me some vertical "bones" in my flower beds.

Glad we got that figured out now. DH said he never heard it call soffit either. My cabinets go all the way to top, wish I had space on top. But then that would mean extra cleaning and I'm not big on cleaning anything.

A while back we had a good size earthquake and I was so happy that DH had anchored my curio cabinet to the wall. It took me this long to decie to dust it and I discovered the top glass shelf fell down, 3 corners of it, and a couple of my precious moments got broken. Have to look for the super glue now. Before I put anything back I'm investing in some florists putty, or do they call it earthquake putty, and put in on all shelves where they sit on the plugs. I needed to tell my sob story to someone. I feel a little better now.

most of those are plastic . wood ones are rare for outside down here . they are sold for closet doors at h.d. and lowes.you can either put hardware on them to slide or hinges to bifold . they let air circulate in closets ,or linen closets. the plastic ones can also be painted in your choice of color to simulate outdoor fencing or for privacy screens . i wouldn't want to put wood outside , it would ruin pretty fast in the south .warp , rot , ect .would have to seal pretty good , and they are expensive .you can put hooks on any of them to hang stuff . sally

Dahtzu, I know you showed your pics of your lampshade back at the beginning of the month, but I've just gotten back to this thread. If you haven't already come up with a use for it, how about making a fountain out of it? It already has a hole in the middle of it. A stool for 10 cents, what a deal! It looks well used and you are getting more life out of it. I found a hand made wooden step stool at a thrift store for about 35 cents (store shutting down so got it really cheap) and it sure comes in handy. I'm at the age where it isn't safe to climb on stools but this one is sturdy and gives me just the right height I need for the higher cupboards.

This past weekend we bought a charcoal grill that would have cost us $225 if it had been new. Hubby had been drooling over one just like it for months. This one had been used one time and it cost us the total sum of $45. It had belonged to a family member of the seller who had died. The man was just thrilled to get it out of his storage shed. I think that is our best buy ever and we go garage sale shopping all the time.

At another one I got some awesome musical CDs for 50 cents each. They had never even been taken out of the plastic wrappers. The guy was in the music business and had lots of music related stuff. I spent $5.50 for the items below.
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys - 2 disk set
Charlie Rich - Love Songs
Eddy Arnold - The Hits
George Jones - Cup of Loneliness - 2 disk set
Michael McDonald - In the Spirit - A Christmas Album
Patti Page - Golden Hits
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Live Two Five
Willie Nelson - Willie Nelson and Friends Live and Kickin'

I have one of those old stools too. It was in our house when I was a little girl. It needs to be redone -- on my list of "things to do". I wouldn't part with mine for anything.

i still don't feel grown up enough to wear white! really--i won't buy anything white because i just know i will stain it, get dirt on it or ruin it in the wash! so no--an all white kitchen wouldn't work for me--plus where do you put stuff that comes your way but isn't white? or do you paint it white?

Glad this got bumped up, I've been reading about all the wonderful finds. Would love to hear some more great stories about other's trash.

A neighbor came over and asked if I wanted her outdoor swing. She was going to put it out to the curb. Cushions were gone, but in the meantime I threw an old comfortor over it and put some carpet samples on it and it will work for me until I find a good sale. Canopy will have to be replaced, someday. It sat out in the sun for 10 years that I know of and not it sits at one end of garden.

Not a big find, but I like it. Found a crystal frog. He suffered an internal
fracture, but was not broken. Marked 'as is' and sold for fifty measly cents.

Love this thread... when our neighbor on the corner next to us was moving we asked if they were taking their big windmill. You know the type green tripod legs, yellow windmill with red in the middle. They said no you may have it , Yipee. love the windmill. They moved into a newer mobile home just up the hill from us. Guess what they have in their yard again... guess they missed their windmill and bought another exactly the same.

Good deal on that windmill. I think my non gardening or T2T friend would have put that in her yard. She has a few garden art around, but not enough as far as I'ml concerned. Notice my neighbor has an old windmill in her yard, wondering if she will ever part with it, I can dream can't I.

psychw2...No that windmill was not there property when they bought the place as it was a new mobile put on the property. They were nice neighbors when they lived next to us, the husband mainly. The wife was on the quiet side, never really got to know her. At any rate we got our windmill , love it!

Dahtzu, well, I don't seek them for collection, but when I see a
particular frog that just 'jumps' out at me (LOL) I pick it up. I've
just accumulated them over time, and have received many as
gifts. Most recently, hubby's daughter gave me a set of
carved soapstone toads. Too cute.

But of course, nothing beats the good old living kind.

Curves you can do many things with it anything but tossing it!!! Im not sure how it would hold up in the weather outside.. BUT if it was me, I would put a solar panel in the top and sit the broken side in the back so you couldnt see it.. Maybe in front of a plant? or garden wall? ORRRRRRR you could use it as a little display house.. Go with the solar panel and turn it so you could see inside the shade, add some moss and a little fairy, maybe if its big enough you can add some tiny furniture for the fairy.. Ummm yea it would look great in my daughters fairy garden that we are working on... :-) Im gonna have to keep an eye out for one.. See its not really broken, it just needs a new purpose.. ♥ You could even do the fairy idea inside, Im just not sure how it would hold up outside.. And instead of a solar light inside you could add a small bulb like you would use in villiage houses..

Here is a link for the solar lights I was talking about. Just incase you didn't see this thread... WONDERFUL info and sparked a whole new obsession with me..
