I am just learning about making stained glass. I will be taking some classes in the fall and can't wait to make some windows. Is it possible to make a stained glass shower door? I know that I would have to put something on it to protect it from the water, but can it really be done? Thank you for your patience for probably asking a really stupid question.

Very good question Karen. My guess is that a stained glass insert in your shower door would be too heavy to hold up to the daily opening and closing. There are transparent paints that resemble stained glass which might make an acceptable substitute.

Many cities also have regulations about using regular glass, as opposed to tempered glass, in bathrooms.

A friend of ours with an older home that pre-dated the regulations slipped in the shower, put his hand through the glass door and ended up with a severed tendon.

I hate to be a wet-blanket (no pun intended) but I think a shower door might be a potential safety issue even if it were sandwiched between 2 pieces of tempered glass...and then it would weigh a ton anyway---you could get a shower and a workout at the same time LOL!

If you use the stained glass paints, make sure to use them on the OUTSIDE of the glass. It would not hold up to the cleaning that the inside requires. It does hold up in the bathroom well though, I've had it on a mirror for years. You would also have to take the doors off to paint them so you could lay them flat, but I think it would be beautiful.

It sounds like you are thinking about doing a mosaic over the tempered glass. Yes it would work, the problem would be the wheight of all the glass and grout would destroy the hinges on the door. They are not designed to carry that much wheight.
