How often or when should the red twig be pruned?
And what branches or sections should be removed?

I'd prune in spring and remove older stems that no longer look brightly coloured (old stems look rather corky; they are also very twiggy compared to younger ones). I generally remove stems over 5 years old to encourage frsh, brightly coloured ones.
