I hang out in the Noertheast garden forum most of the time, but my Casablanca lilies are in bloom and I've got "the flow" so I'm painting two pieces.
I mask out the flowers which are white and paint in the background first.
This is the beginning of both pieces.
I love this red chair. It belongs to my sister and I have used it in many prints and paintings, I like the curvy back against the lily petals.
This is the small one 15X22

Woo Hoo! I like lilies and water color, too. I was going to paint a series of lilies but got distracted by morning glories. I'm excited to see how your painting progresses. Where I live there is more of a problem with too dry! I'm impatient anyway. And not very good at photographing my work. Like the red chair!

I have built two new perennial beds and am keeping a photo record of the new plants growth month by month.
Sometimes the pics are good subjects for paintings.
Sorry you cant grow lilies but NM has some terrific plnts that dont survive here. WE can be thankful for our strengths and differences.
I'll post from time to time.

no salt on that painting but I often do use it for texture on leaves and corney as it sounds for Mood and Effect.
I am not an anal painter as you can see so sprinkle where ever i want stuff and where there is a wet area that is too dark, salt clears it away nicely.
I will frame both pieces but they don't match in size.
One is a half sheet the lilies w/red chair is a full sheet.
Nice companions in an exhibit though.
Group show comming up in May 2009. I'll see what I want to hang in that. There might be something between now and then I like better.

This is a moody Birch tree scene. I loved the way wet on wet moved everything around.

It is a gallery to show the art work of local people, and I just am director, since I am no longer teaching. Sometimes I show my work, but more often, it is work from the community. The county fiscal court asked me if I would do it, then gave us the facilities, and keeps up the repair, etc. No expenses, and a real addition to this tiny community.

How wonderful and generous of the county.
Comercial galleries are few and far between these days.
My cousin is a painter in Maine and galleries are suffering there as well as here.
In the past six years nearly all the profitable galleries in this area and city sold out or closed.
I hang in two.
One here in Rochester and another 20 miles away.
No sales in the far one for a year now ( my work is over $300.00) and here in town I had a solo show in the month of May and sold four small pieces.Sales don't keep up with the cost of supplies.
These are a few pictures of my show when it was hung.
This is a beautiful gallery space, just two years old.

Fiscal court takes care of all my expenses, but I get no salary, still I love having a place to show work, it is the only gallery in our small county. I love it. Will see if I can find a photo or two for you.

Beautiful work, and looks to be an excellent gallery for you. My work is about 500 and up, but I do a lot of commissioned work, also, so rarely have much to show. It depends on whether it draws a crowd or not, as to how much we sell. I always try to have a reception for the artists near the opening date...

And more if I can find some...

This is from the same show, a group of older women who formed a painting circle, they were so excited to be able to show their work...but they do work small, and the gallery is sort of geared for larger pieces.

It was a good show anyway.

Will find more later, I have some okra waiting to be put up...or whatever I am going to do with it...

Now that I am with DG I do more photography, with my Nikon coolpix.
The night blooming cirrus is a composition from Googling the flower image, since my friend wanted that perticular one and I don't grow it.
I'm not sure about the trees, might be Aspen.

I took a class at a college night school program. I didn't like the teacher so I bought a few books and took two painting workshops that were one week long each.
This was spread out over three years.
I would say I was mostly self taught, passion and a driving need to succeed is what kept me going for 12 years.
I have an art background but in another dicipline.
I am very critical of my self and believe there are areas that could use some plumping up.
Like my color sence isn't what it should be and composition sometimes is a bit off.
Most one or two day classes are just introductions to the medium.
Have you ever done anykind of art work?

Yeah, I too have a problem with being pretty tough on my own work - it just never measures up to what I see in my mind.

I've always done pencil sketches and mostly faces, but had to branch out for school and have been enjoying using color.

I've done a couple of watercolor things - mostly of their choosing and not really of my taste - ye ol' vase-in-window-with-poppies (no public burning yet, but it's been hot here) a couple pseudo landscapes and a portrait that I had tried a couple of different times in colored pencil with unsatisfactory results - it's better in watercolor. Not fabulous, but better.

Surprisingly (?) I feel like my composition skills have been greatly improved with photography - having a digital camera unlocked me from the costs of film and developing so I'm free to take as many shots as I please, and delete just as many as I wish with no thought to waste. And that almost instant feedback is invaluable.

Thanks - - - now if I could only sell it.
One sold painting this year would get me even with what I have spent on art supplies and framing.

Your painting is so much more than the actual picture! Beautiful!!
Good luck on selling your work.
Art has never been an easy thing to recoup your costs----guess that's why some of us do it just for the pleasure.
May be speaking just for myself on that, but found that I have a problem putting a price on a painting, let alone selling it! Usually end up giving it away. Just don't know how to put a price on something that I have spent so much time & effort on, & don't feel right charging for something that to me comes natural.
Could use some help on this one!!!!

Go to several galleries and look at work similar to yours.
ie: oils 11x14 or watercolors same soze see what the average prices are and price accordingly.
Priceing isnt a arbitraty as you might think.
Customers for paintings shop around and they know what they are expected to pay.
You will NEVER get the money for the hours you work on a piece but there has to be a monetary value somewhere.
Dont give your work away, it devalues you as well as the work.If you dont charge something for it whoever gets the painting will think you dont value it .

Camillia~Let's see some of your work, and maybe we can help with the pricing.
I agree with ge, visit some galleries and you soon get a pretty good idea of what price sells.
Not sure I agree with not giving your work away, its one of my favorite gifts to give.

Gardenket Your right.Changed my mind, I'm always donating work to charity for auctions to raise money since I dont give in the monitary way.

Gardnerkett & ge1836,

Yes, I know it's wrong to GIVE your work away, but the people I know, that want my work, can-never afford it! They want it---they ask for it---they get it! Better than it sitting in a room collecting dust!

Had my art ability hammered into my head from the time I was able to draw a stick figure---do this---do that---to the point that I never wanted to do any-thing with it!!!! It's suppossed to be fun---not a job!!! (Unless you want it to be!)

What I do now, is what I want to do, when I want to do it!

Unfortunatly, now that I WANT to do my art, don't always have the time!

Camil~Why not join an art group in your community, they usually have connections to artist's cooperatives that will help you price and market your work. Looks like lots of talent there to me, don't forget to have fun! One book I found a number of years ago, helped me make the transition from the corporate world (Shell) to retirement and art, was The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. Stay positive and good things will happen.

Thanks for the info on the book! Will check it out.

Actually had a local artist a few years ago that wanted me to paint more pictures & show them in his gallery---didn't have the time then, as we had just moved into our new home & was too busy remodeling & building my gardens.
Well---nine years later, am still remodeling & building my gardens!!!! Hubby says "By the time you're through remodeling, it will be time to move.", I tell him that I will NEVER be done.
I am, however, a little closer to my goal, & have a little more time now to spend with my art, at least in the winter time.

Didn't mean to take over your forum----just like to check out what every-one else is doing!
