Aloha everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for Christi so that she knows how much she is loved, and that we are all rooting for her on the 12th - the day of her serious back surgery.

Christi, can I call Mike a couple of days after the surgery to see how you are doing? I am sure we would all like an update and I know you will be too groggy to be on the computer!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers in the up coming days...

We love you.

Just to round out my day...will be having our 16 year old Westie put down this evening. She bit me really bad last Friday night. Bit Mike about 10 days ago. She sleeps, eat and bites. Obvious she is not the loving pet we have had all these years and she is in some sort of pain. Having filled out Advance Directives for myself, feel it is only fair to finally make this horrendous decision for her.

Our heart goes out to you. We had to put down our mix-breed Lhazza Hapso at the ripe old age of 16 1/2 after her kidneys failed.

Dementia is not restricted to people alone in old age. A major change in demeanour and personality could be changed by something like that. It's a hard decision, but it's for the best. But hey, you already know that, don't you? Be strong and don't let that influence YOUR big event tomorrow.

Take care.

She has been biting for two years. Recently it has escalated. We have talked it to death, always agreeing that it would be the best choice. Just couldn't let go. This bite is serious. Thought I would ask the surgeon to take look AFTER THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST has done his thing. very ugly looking and super sore

Note to Christi.. I hope your wound from Hannah's bite is healing; as well as the heartache of having to put her down. She enjoyed lots of good loving years with you, and it was time.
As for your healing, don't rush it, the longer you rest the better it will mend. I do hope your pains were lessen with the surgery and you regain your mobility soon. Look forward to your postings.

Update...
I just missed a call from Mike. My DH told me when I got home that he called and said she didn't get a room until 12:30 last night. Today has been a struggle to adjust the pain medication, and Mike said she is in ICU now. They try to arouse her from the anethesia and the pain is very bad and they have to medicate her again.
My DH just had back surgery (1 fusion) on the 6th. When I got to see him, each time he started to wake up he also was in a whole lot of pain. He would ask for something for pain and they would give him something else. That went on all night, but the next day when I went to see him he was awake, had eaten some and drank coffee. Not that the pain wasn't there, it was just that they found the right complex that gave him relief.
Christi had her surgery so late in the day, and it was such an extensive surgery it will take time. Being under anethesia so long it may take a while for that to leave her and the pain meds reach the level of relief. After two back surgeries myself, I can say the drugs right after surgery made me feel worse once they level those out she can rest better.
I am believing that this is a temporary situation and the pain will be easing up for Christi. God never gives us more than we can bear.

Shari... people say that DG is just a gardening site? Be there heretics and blasphemers in our midst? Point them out to me! I shall put them to the question until they recant, much like the Spanish Inquisition did long ago. I see ourselves as a virtual, global, benevolent, non-hierarchic order of like-minded people. I will accept no other description.

I hope that Christi's pain goes away quickly. I, myself, am hypersensitive to pain. The whole family, on my mother's side is like that. I don't do pain well; bring on the strong drugs! I can do heavily medicated - I don't mind. But you don't want to be around me when I'm in pain. Christi, you remain in our prayers and thank you, everyone, for relaying the info you have.

Take care, all.

In the waking room after my hernia operation 5 years ago, I heard 2 lovely asian twin nurses talking to me. I was quite groggy but there was (thankfully) no pain.

And there they were, 2 of them at the foot of my bed, calling: "Sylvain... Mr. Forest... Are you OK? Are you awake?". I told them: " Please only one of you talk at one time. I can't listen to both of you at once". They, they said: "But Mr. Forest, I'm alone here". I put one hand in front of my left hand and wouldn't you know it, she was right! That might also explain the 2 clocks on the wall. Ah, the wonders of modern medicine.

ok at 11:41 pm the fax is on it's way to the ICU unit to Christi
Instead of sending 14 pages I only send her the posts that were entered after her last post August 11, 2008
4:55 PM and I removed my posts to make it smaller page wise so it was 3 pages total
I am also going to share what I said at the beginning of it as I know some of you were already in bed or busy else where

"Mike called me Thursday evening with the update and I thought what better way to let ya know what is going on then to send you your thread on DG….. See you can run and you can try to hide but I will find you one way or another… LMAO…but then Mike did help me by giving me the number to ICU so I could call and get a fax number. Make sure you thank Lindsey as she is the one that gave it to me and said she would make sure you got it.
Now I know this isn’t everyone as it was after 8pm when I posted so I am going to step up here and let you know that Everyone is praying for you and sending you wishes for a speedy recovery BUT that means you BE A GOOD GIRL and DO what the doctor and nurses say."

My Pleasure Alex I thought it would really help her spirit being able to see what she can't get to right now.
I know alot of friends are here and when ya can't get online to talk to them you go through withdrawals and get depressed.

She is at Baylor Hospital (Truett Hospital ICU Rm 403) but they are hoping to move her to a regular room soon.
When I called last night to get the fax number the nurse said she can take phone calls but she was asleep

I believe her home address is in the ...oh shoot forgot the name of it but it is the spot where you put your addy here on DG. ...if not I do have it but you will have to dmail me for it if you want to send her a card or such*S*

As much as we want to speak with Christi, please refrain from calling her for another day or so. Having gone through this myself and with my husband, what she needs is rest right now, hopefully sleeping a lot. When she is awake, she is in pain and unless someone is there, can't turn to answer a phone easily. Contacting Mike on the cell would be best.

VERY good news, thanks for passing that along Phyllis! Like I said you know you are going to be sore and hurt, but the pain killers they have to give you at first can be the worst. Until the swelling starts going down and the antiobiotics take over they have to do that. Glad to hear she is on track!

Phyllis, thanks again for the update. Great news, let's hope she comes home quick! Does this mean she's out of ICU?
I'm not planning to call (those phones must be ringing like crazy anyway), but I believe an email or regular mail can give her just as much encouragement and pleasure.
Christi, I'm so happy on the progress! We are all waiting for you to get home and sign in! In the meantime, prayers, positive thoughts and gentle hugs,

He handed the phone to Christi which I was not planning on ...and I didn't' ask her either
she is not focusing to be able to read so Mike was reading the posts to her, she was happy to have it.
she is horse of course and they are watching her blood pressure so I did not keep her on the phone to talk I told her to do what the doctor says and make sure she has help not to be stubborn and try to do things herself. LOL

Oh, I got to watching Olympics and forgot to post that Mike called. I got the same good progress info that he gave Phyllis but he did say that she still was not in a room, it would be tomorrow afternoon. He said the ICU she is in, is not the Trauma type ward, it is more a special care section, and he would love for them to leave her there.

Of course I will say it before someone else...she IS "special" and we are glad she is getting close attention.

Phyllis or Jen...Did either of you ask how the dog bite was? I imagine it would not stand a chance against the antiobiotics she is getting.
Oh and she is getting up on her own to go to the bathroom!

Aloha,

Just home from work and there was a messge from Mike - wonderful day for Christi! Same news he told Phyllis, but how wonderful of him to take the time to give me a call!

No, I didn't ask Mike about the bite - I kept it very brief as he had only just spoken to the surgeon when he called me the first time, and I knew he must have had a hundred phone calls to make on top of what must have been a very stressful day...I rather imagine you are right Sheila about the antibiotics.

Although I wasn't home to take the message, Mikes voice sounded very happy with today's progress.

Warmest Aloha to all.

She asked me to post and let everyone know that the doctor said another day or two she will be going home! She is in a room now, it is #JO608 in the Baylor Hospital in Dallas (Johnson Hosp. Bldg.). I am sure she is really enjoying the food too! LOL! Home will look so wonderful when she gets there. Recovery will be so much easier there too!

Aloha, I hope you haven't all gone to bed, but Sweet Mike just called...Christi is doing well and they have her pain medication adjusted to where she is as comfortable as can be expected. Mike says that she is walking to the bathroom and is eating well, real food now - not broth. There was some talk about Christi going to a physical therapy center for a couple of days after being relased from the hospital, but Mike wants her to come straight home so that he can look after her and "feed her up with some good food".

Mike said that they had overdone the medication whilst she was under and she wouldn't wake up (I think he said 6 hours). Anyway, he raised the alarm and come to find out that she had been given muscle relaxants on top of morphine, which the doctor admitted to Mike should not have been done. Because of this they didn't give her any pain medication for the next two days - imagine!

I hope that I have got the facts right! Mike said that she had a wonderful day today - he can't wait to get her home in his care.

Our Christi's coming home!

Jen... That call that my DH took, he told me that Mike said they were having trouble wakeing up from the anesthesia. Then he said also they were having trouble regulating her pain killers. So I thought DH must have gotten it wrong; and didn't post that part. Plus, I didn't want to alarm anyone with info I didn't know it to be true since I hadn't talked with Mike.
So...that was the case! She was over medicated I guess you would say. Thank goodness Mike was with her to keep them at bay. Hate that she had to endure all of that, but at least she is past it now.

Good day, everyone.

That medication problem is indeed unfortunate but that is all in the past. Christi is home now. Her entourage will take good take of her. She'll be back in shape in no time. We can't wait.

For Christi, who has just lived through her surgical ordeal and for everyone who sees the future with apprehension, I offer this Litany Against Fear from Frank Herbert's SciFi masterpiece, Dune:

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain."

It helped me tremendously a couple years ago when I thought a depression would get the better of me, when after staring at the leaves swaying in the wind for months, I had to muster enough courage to look into a deep dark recessed corner of myself to heal or crumble. One does not die from such introspection but you inevitably return a changed person. We must not fear...

Take your time and heal fully, Christi; do not fear. We're all here for you.

Sylvain.

Hi Christi, Glad to hear you're home and on the road to recovery. Remember that recovery - especially fron a major surgery like yours - can be one step forward and two back sometimes. Rest when you're tired - and even when you're not. It will speed your recovery. I think the body does most of its repair work while you're sleeping so do that a lot.

We are all here and thinking good thoughts for you. Come back to read and comment when you're ready.

Yes, rest is very important. Listen to your body, as the saying goes. However, I find that laughter is also extremely important in healing. That's the trouble with people nowadays, they don't make time to laugh. So, dearest Christi, have a good laugh as often as possible. Don't make me post pictures of myself doing impersonations of Arnold Schwarczeneggar (sp?) in his bodybuilding days!

Those meanies got my fanny out and made me walk around the hospital with crutches..ouch ouch ouch ouch...but...one week later, after doing the excercises prescribed..I tossed the crutches and was on a cane...so ...like in all things of life ..

Having never had surgery nor anesthesia, did not really know what to expect.
Feel like I have been run over by a Mac Truck. 12 days out and I feel worse rather than better. Others that have had anethesia tell me that it is really the problem...being out for 10 hours. Had lots of company yesterday here at the house and the thread is a real upper. Still stayed up too much. Monday or Tuesday start formal PT.

Time we started a thread with the adventures of Mitch Fitzgerald and family.

Morning! Now I am here! Big fire last night which started on the other side of the Pi'ilani and jumped the road with the wind, to our side. It ran up the fields at the back of our neighbors homes and for a while it looked as if their homes would catch fire. Luckily the wind died with sunset and the firemen managed to get it under control as far as the homes were concerned. We had four helicopters using water from peoples' swimming pools to dump water as it took a few seconds less time than to get it from the ocean. Thick smoke everywhere. Local contractors send out their machines to scrape firebreaks, and also their water trucks to fill the pumper trucks on the spot - wonderful the way everyone comes together on a small island with limited resources. I spent most of the evening taking out food and drink for the firemen and volunteers, and we had a houseful of nervous neighbors. The helicopters stopped flying at nine oclock last night as it was getting too dangerous, but this morning (it's now 6am) they are starting dousing again - I guess trying to put out any embers before the trades get up at noon. There are quite a few kiawe trees on the hill and they will smolder for days and then suddenly burst into flame.

I hope this morning finds you feeling better Christi, I am sure that the anesthesia has probably depressed your whole body system, and you are still under the influence - I hope my silly chat will help take your mind off your pain, even if it's only for a second or two...

Off to work this morning, my co-worker, Gerry, who has had some major medical problems with his wife and son, has now come down with severe stomach problems and has been hospitilized, so I am filling in.

Love and hugs to both you and sweet Mike...

It just is what it is and when my body aches I know it is asking me to be gentle and lie down. Christi, dearest. Hurting all over is not fun but it is OK at this stage of the game. It will improve as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow.

Gail is in tremendous pain today. The pain has been increasing all week. Last night, she told me she would ask her rheumatologist for stronger medication because it is getting unbearable. At times like this, I try to be supportive but I am crumbling on the inside. She is sleeping now. She will do so most of the day, in that limbo state that is the slumber of the heavily drugged. Jokingly, I tell her I could place firecrackers in her nostrils, light them and she wouldn't feel it. Well, almost jokingly; there is a bit of truth in there.

At any rate, laughing is better than crying. Laugh, Christi, laugh until tears run down your cheeks. Your pain will pass slowly. To my chagrin, Gail's will only increase with time. One day at a time, one step at a time, one pain at a time. Let's all be strong here.

Cassandra is right Christi. The Dr told my DH if his temp was 101 to call the office. That is an indication of what could cause an infection. You have a lot of hardware there that your body is treating like foreign objects trying to fight against it. With your strength down and your diet probably not up to par right now, you may need antiobiotics if you aren't taking them now.
Think of you often. When you feel up to it, give me a call.

Hi my dear, dear friend! I am so glad to see that you are home and under the care of wonderful Dr. Mike. Like the others I urge you to call if you really do have a fever, but check, because (for me anyway) pain makes me feel hot. Since as Carol says, sitting is a big pain - but as our huggable polar bear indicates, laughter is a good medicine - why don't you have Mike pick up some of those AudioBooks...preferrable fun ones...at your nearest library. You can rest, even your eyes, but still enjoy some mental stimulation and maybe even a giggle or two. Were I closer, I would read to you, but alas the telephone bill would break the bank on that one. So sorry that I haven't been here much, but you have been in my thoughts daily.

Feeling really lazy. Have gone from one nap to another today. Eating protein when I am not hungry for anything. The lazy immediately follows another pain pill. Tomorrow morning go to surgeon for checkup and to have the staples removed. I'm told that is not as bad as it sounds. (I've been told a lot of things)

Still grateful to each and everyone of you for your concern and love. That's what makes everyday worthwhile.

Hi, everyone.

Christi, I hope you had a laugh with those ridiculous photos I posted. Let's try to keep your mind away from your operation.

Aren't these troubled times, weather-wise? There is that awful hurricane Gustav that is on its way to Louisiana and that nefarious Hanna on its way to who-knows-where. Yesterday, Hanna's track would take her down to Hispaniola and Cuba. Now, it seems to be headed a bit more towards Florida. Only time will tell.

And best yet, after crying for year upon year that lake Okechobee's level is too low, they're now saying there will soon be too much water in the lake. I say we each buy a 5-gallon plastic container and send it to the good people that administer lake Okechobee's water level. If they have too much water, they can store the excess until there is not enough for their taste. What is this, Goldylocks and the three polar bears? Too high, Too low, Just right - no, just too high again. Hello, people... make up your mind, already!

I have installed a miniature pond by our patio set. I have made one of those homemade filters I had discussed earlier. It works very well. I'll post pictures of this contraption soon. We can now sit outside and listen to the sound of water as it exits the filter and cascades into a fountain at the surface of the water: very soothing.

Gail and I are still suffering from that crazy flu bug we caught a few days ago. We had to cancel the housewarming party, which would have taken place today. We'll reschedule in a couple of weeks. There is no way we could have entertained today.

Take care, all.

Sylvain, loved the photos of your illustrious ancestors, now we can see where you get your good looks! Sorry to hear both of you are down with a bug and had to cancel your housewarming - I hope you are feeling a little better now. I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your pond when you feel up to it.

Christi, so very happy to hear that you were able to take a spin around the garden, and happy to hear that Creamsickle is putting on a show for you. Don't bother about bending down to smell her as brugs put out their best perfume at night, and then you don't have to do any bending at all, you can smell them in the air!

The fires are still popping up in small areas, but nothing the 'chopper can't handle. We are so dry on the hill that the fires burn right down the roots and travel underground and then flare up again as soon as the embers come across a patch of new vegetation...We had a pot luck at the firestation last evening so that we could all meet the firemen and thank them. It was a great turn out, and I believe all the station was very touched that the neighborhoods turned out to thank them personally for their hard work and to give them our Aloha. The fire had come right up to the back fence of the station, and six of the firemens personal cars had melted from the heat, it was very sad to see.

Aloha to all!

Should not be complaining about anything at all what with so many being moved to avoid Gustav.

Bet Jen and Frank were the instigators for the firestation potluck. Such super people all of your are.

Of course, my prayers are for the good health and safety of each one.

My brother is in Groves and the police dept over there actually told him to wait until about 5pm to leave--if at all--because I10 is so clogged up with people from LA. He says about half the people in his neighborhood are still there--he is close to 39th (maybe 37th street?) street and pure atlantic hwy (or at least that's what they called it when I lived over there 25 yrs ago). Traffic is fine in Houston, once they get here anyway and they said on the news this morning that Houston (esp the west side) still is only about 70% booked and full in the motels/hotels.

Good Morning, Jen. Much better, thank you. Stayed up and dressed in street clothes all day yesterday. Three weeks from the "D day". Can walk (not very fast) standing straight up and looking forward.

It is almost 8 AM and it looks rainy. pretty windy right now. Forecast is for a high of 81 and winds 20-30 with gusts of 40. That sounds like a winter day here. hahaha

Sure hope those that have been run out of their homes can go back soon. I'm afraid many of our DG family has had lots of destruction. I often lurk on the Mid-South forum and there is a lot of heartbreak there. I am blessed in that I am warm and dry with my nest still in one piece. I pray that the aftermath will be better than Katrina. It appears they have learned something. My neighbors brother and family came from Picayune, Miss. Said they passed acres and acres and acres of the trailers that were built for temporary housing after Katrina. They are literally falling down where they stand while we (taxpayers) are still paying rent on the land to store them.
Pitiful porkbarrel. Need to get off of this or I will be deleted.

Wish you could get some of the rain to soak the ground.

Hi, everyone.

Christi, knowing you're able to dress and be mobile again is such great news. Gail sends her best. Speaking of Gail, we are celebrating 31 years of mariage today. How can that be? I'm only 42.

Concerning the evacuations in New Orleans, I was reading in the newspaper this morning that it all went very well. However, the residents are going to be kept away from the city for a while yet because the authorities are cleaning up the debris brought on by the storm. The storm is over and people want to go back right away and tend to the properties they left behind.

However, those foolhardy people that didn't evacuate and stayed behind are free to go wherever they want and do whatever they want. That's another case where defiance pays. In the light of that, it seems that next time, people are not going to be so willing to leave and they'll be right back where they started.

Keep getting better.
Sylvain.

Christi...glad to hear you are up and staying up!!! Do you feel stronger????

Randy just left to return home!! We had a great visit and I found he was comfortable to be with just like family (the kind you actually LIKE!!!).

Unfortunately, most people don't understand statistics and are angry they left. It was a statistical event that caused them to get the people out...next time they may be right and the folks won't have left. Too bad. And we all pay for it either way. Oh well...it's only money... :(

I think people lost so much in the hurricane before that they didn't want someone telling them they had to leave everything behind again. I think most would have left on their own, but come back the next day. They forget too; without electricity and gas you don't have a way to cook, clean, and stores aren't open either.

Yes, but if you do evacuate on your own it costs money. With the price of gas and motels, and food, it gets to be very expensive. Our plan is "Cat three and under stay, "Cat 4 or more, GO!" We've ridden out Cat three's before with no problems.
Hopefully we won't have to evacuate this year. We do watch the storms very carefully. We have great respect for what they can do. It's a difficult decision to make. We are in the storm surge, so for Cat 4 we would be under a mandatory evacuation. 37 hours on the road for Rita 2005, was a most unpleasant experience that I don't ever want to go thru again. Then Rita turned and didn't come here. I thoroughly understand their frustrations, believe me!

The one thing about living here is, "at least you can see it coming". It's not like a Volcano, or Earthquake, so it does have it's advantages. We've only had to evacuate once in 31 years, so we have much to be thankful for!!!!

Christi, so glad that you are improving. My prayers are with you "Sweetie". I know that it is difficult being in pain and moving slowly. "This too shall pass", be patient.
Next year you will be so glad you made the decision to do this! God bless you!

Good Morning!!

Glad to see everyone is up and about. Two days of staying dressed and moving around has caught up with me. Had my first outing last night as we went to our daughter's for dinner. (only 3 miles) My mind and body are not yet in sync. I want very much to be on my own but my body tires soooo easily. Literature they gave me says it takes equal energy for this to heal as it does to run 5 miles per day. Never did that at the peak of my life. Will probably do a lot laying flat on the bed today.

It is 66 degrees this morning. Can you believe it? Were things different I would be outside in the jungle. Bless his sweet heart, at my direction, Mike straightened our little greenhouse and readied it for sudden occupancy. I wanted to do it myself so badly.

Carol, I can picture all of our friends here on DG the same as RJ...family to the bone. He was here last spring and I am ready anytime for a return visit. Sheila, Phyllis, Mitch, Broncbuster have all been here and I wanted them to stay much longer. Our visit together with Jennie was much too short and made me just want more and more. The day at RJ"S with Sharie, JB, Jeanne and her son was like a family reunion. Anyone heard from Pepper lately? My conciousness comes and goes depending on how much pain meds are necessary and I seem to be taking inventory today. There is a long list of friends that I haven't specifically mentioned and it is not because of lack of caring. The above list is ones I have had the privilege of meeting and hugging their sweet necks. I plan to meet every single one of you in the future. Maybe my intentions for the months to come. Wouldn't you be surprised if I just showed up at your doorstep?? Actually, so would I. chuckle

BTW, there are good side effects to this experience...20 pounds lighter...woooohooo! Now if I can just keep that in line.

Hi Christi - You are sure sounding much better. Continue to pamper yourself and to allow others to take care of you.

I like what they told you about the healing being like running five miles a day. Helps you show some respect for that body that's been carrying you around all these years.

Continue to take care and let your body - not your mind - let you know when you're ready to do more, It will happen.

Squishy squirm 7 plus hours..got back 9:50AM...went right to bed for a 4 hour nap. LOL...ask Carol about my naps!
We really did have a good visit. Fortuneatly I've been to the islands a few 40 times or so ..so my priority 1 was visiting with Carol..was a fabulous time. Like she said, it was though we had known each other all our lives and I was just popping in for a visit. Just like when I visited with you Christi! When Carol would politely ask me to get something for her ..I finally told her...Hey..just say BOY! get that for me!...then when Mark and Kevin arrived we had Boy 1, 2 and 3! Great guys!.

I thought you only had to fly first class? The seats between Dallas an LAX were the smallest I have ever seen. while I was carrying extra weight, I 'm not all that big to begin with and I thought I was a sausage in a veinna sausage can!!!

Glad you had such a great time. Bet Carol is the ultimate hostess...unless that could be Jenny. Bet you saw fantastic tropical plants. I'm sooooo ready to get back to the garden. Still barely walking so guess will just have to wait a while longer.

And so it came to pass on the 8th day of the month of September in this, the year of our Lord 2008, that Sylvain Forest became a permanent resident of these glorious United States of America.

All in all, the process took a full 2 years. I say it's like Christmas because you prepare and prepare for it and it's over in a flash. I can now live here, work here, travel abroad and return here unhindered by the good people at Immigration at the airport or the harbor. In a few words as in a thousand, you're all stuck with me. Gnaa, Gna, Gna!

This thread is rather quiet these days, isn't it? What's going on? Christi, how is the recovery?

Feeling much better, thank you for asking. 4 weeks tomorrow. Getting really bad cabin fever but don't really feel like getting out either.

I know now that when I start hurting, I need to get out and walk at least 1/2 mile...continuous walking...and the pain goes away!!! Still doing the 'trapeze bar' exercise as it works only the tummy and core muscles, not the back. This has been a learning experience!

I still have the wheeled walker if you want to use it. I used it with both surgeries and it is so much better than a cane or holding onto walls. It was also good to move groceries in after I was better but couldn't lift much. It made me feel more productive at least.

I love fresh plums. My grandmother used to harvest the ones that grew wild on our property in Montreal. She had this great big pickle jar that she sterilized. She would rinse the plums and pack them tight in the jar. Then, she would pour sugar into the jar until it filled every nook and cranny up to halfway up the jar. Then, she would fill the jar to the very top with rhum, close the lid and set them in a cool dark place. The jar would be opened at Christmas, where it was served over ice cream, drunk fruit and syrup. HMMM, how good that was.

Just sharing a childhood memory here. Take care, all.

Try it with a dozen or so black plums, cut in quarters with the pits removed in a glass jar. Now's the time to try if you want to have them for Christmas. I tell you, you'll make a full gallon next year. Plus, they keep indefinitely. Not that they ever sat around for long, but yes they do keep for an awful long time; the longer the better.

Just a little something to look forward to.

How about fresh plum pierogis? My Hungarian grandmother would pit plums, wrap them in home made pierogi dough and drop them in boilng water. They were done when they floated to the top. After draining and cooling a little she would brown them very, very quickly in hot butter and roll in sugar. If we kids were around they ofen didn't make it to the butter, sugar step. We ate them as fast as they cooled enough.

This dough recipe is from allrecipes.com It is pretty authentic.

DOUGH RECIPE
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup warm water
1 egg, beaten

DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl mix together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Make a well in the center.
In a separate bowl mix together the vegetable oil, warm water, and beaten egg. Pour into the well of the dry ingredients. Knead dough for 8 to 10 minutes.
Cover dough and let rest for 2 hours. Roll out and fill as desired.

Worth every bit of the trouble!

Eat, drink and be merry: the three pillars of a sybaritic life. I'm all for that. Oh yeah, baby!

When I sit at the real estate office, I get to watch people walking by on the sidewalk. Some of them there quite mature ladies look like they have been sucking on lemons all their life and their husbands are not much better. There's a yiddish word for that but I forget. I don't ever want to look anything like that. At 53 years old, I still have my boyish good looks and I am intent on keeping them as long as possible.

When they finally drop my remains in a great big cardboard box and turn the incinerator on, that blaze is going to burn steadily for at least 3 days, melt the firebrick and the whole neighbourhoods will smell like baking brownies. I just took a picture of myself. If I do say so myself, I am just too good looking for my own good. Remember, Christi... laugh, it helps the healing process.I hope this brings a smile to your lips.

Take care, all.

My mother had a recipe much like the plums that Sylvain's grandmother did. Dried apricots into a pot and reconstitute with just a little water and steamed. Put in a pretty jar, add sugar and vodka. Gave them away at Christmas. Sometimes add a few cherries just for color. I may have to revive the tradition this year.

I wish you had mentioned that this morning early, or called me. I could have helped today, but in the morning we are going down to Glen Rose and picking up my Great Nephew. He will be 4 next month, so there wouldn't be a moment to break away and come help. We will have him Friday night and maybe Sat night too.
We thought about that earlier and put it on our list of things we need to do tomorrow. If we have time in the morning before we take off, we will set plants down on the deck off of stands, bungy cord some of the tall ones or just lay them over. The big pots in the yard we will set in the shop and the little ones too. I have racks in there to get them up off of the floor. When it flooded before here, it was two foot high inside our shop and three foot above the water of the Koi pond! Everything that floated ended up at the end of the yard covered with debris; in the shop it floated to one end. So now we put everything up two foot off the floor.

Oh no, sweetheart. Wouldn't let you do that. Mike has expected to do it and has been very good. Only thing I would want for you is to share anything I have. I have reached the stage where I want to do it myself. Asked the doc yesterday about gardening and he said no for two more months. Too much strain on the bone graft. yuck.

I love, love Glen Rose. No one left there to visit and have been going to relatives my entire life. Enjoy your nephew.
Great grandaughter will be 2 next month and she is at a really precious stage. Of course, I get to love her and play and when she is cross...send her home with her grandmother, our daughter. Her turn. chuckle

HiChristi! Hope you are doing well! The good news here is that now H. Ike is a Cat 2 and may go into land as a one . Bad news is that it has shifted, so now it may cross over Galveston, get into Galveston Bay, and come straight up the ship channel.

We are not evacuating. Tomorrow I will be at my Mom's (three streets over). We are a few miles from the coast and are at 26 ft above sea level. During Alicia we did not have any problems with the storm surge. DS will be here at the house with my sweet little boys, Dusty and Rusty (cats). DD and her family will be at her house.

Please say a prayer for all of us. We have three big trees near our house. I am praying they all stay standing. LOL!

See ya later, Gator!

Hello, everyone.

It's a glorious day in Delray Beach (FL) today. The sun is shining, there is a sweet breeze blowing, the grass is freshly cut and the world spins gently upon its axis.

Best yet is that I finally got a 75-gallon aquarium delivered yesterday. I will finish installing all that today. If you want something hard enough, the universe will give it to you. I paid pennies on the dollar for that aquarium. Oh, I am so pleased. I will need a bit of hardware to complete the setup, some pebbles and some fish but it will be gorgeous. I had been saving space in the new house for that aquarium and now it's here. At the risk of repeating myself, Oh, I am so pleased.

Take care, all.

Hi, everyone.

I worked on my aquarium setup most of the day yesterday . I installed an undergravel filter, the canister filter, filled it with water, added a layer of crushed coral for the under gravel filter, a plastic mosquito net over the crushed coral and large river pebbles over the mosquito net. That way, if the fish decide to dig, as they so often do, the mosquito netting will stop them before they can disrupt the undergravel filter's efficiency. I have introduced 5 baby african cichlids in there this morning. They are quinda lost in the 75 gallons of water but they'll grow. I also plan to add more small fry in there in time. I have posted a request for african cichlids on Craig's list. People are responding nicely.

I still have to take some algae-covered rocks and coral to be pressure-washed before I introduce them to the aquarium. An african cichlid aquarium requires quite a bit of rocks and hiding places for them to feel at ease.

I will certainly bore you with pictures of the whole thing when I am done; brace for it. There's nothing worse than a cichlid enthusiast's doting over his fish.

Take care, all.

This came to me this week and I thought I might share it.

1. When geese fly in the "V-formation," they create an unplift for each other. A flock flying in formation can go 71% further than an individual goose flying alone. When we share a common goal and work together, we can get much more done.

2. If a goose gets out formation, air resistance causes it to get back into place. We need to remember that life is more difficult on our own,.

3. When the lead goose tires, it drops back and another goose flies at the point. We sometimes need to give room for others to lead...it helps us to avoid "burn-out" and gives them an opportunity.

4. Geese in formation honk to encourage the ones in front to keep up the pace. Encouragement can come in many forms...don't recommend honking...but words of encouragement are always appropriate.

5. If a goose has to drop out of formation, two others follow it down and stay until it is able to fly again. This reminds me of the wonderful people that inhabit DG...ready to stand by and just "being there" when the need comes.

We can learn a lot from the geese. The hurricanes of the last 3 years gives me pause to witness how we desire to help each other.

Have a blessed day.

Polar Bear, so happy to hear that you have your aquarium set up, and YES, pictures please! I had an aquarium in Arizona before we moved and had to give to to a friend - and although I only had goldfish in mine, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them, better than TV! It funny how the fish become little personalities after a while!

Christi, really enjoyed you goose facts - I am going to print it off to read it to Mom...D-mail on it's way to you...

Pepper, nice to have you back! We have missed you - how is everything in your part of the world?

RJ and Jeanne, (and all of you in Texas) so glad you are okay, despite the devastation to your paradises. I expect with your energies you will soon have everything cleaned up and fixed up...If there is anything we can do as far as restocking the gardens, please let us know...my heart was with all of you during the hurricane - it SHOULDN'T be, but it is so much worse to watch the news when there are people you know in so much potential danger...

Shari, John, where are you? I miss you...

Hi, everyone.

BHM, people think we are SO weird! Some of you will think so, too. It's OK. Here we are with this 4-foot long, 75 gallon aquarium with state-of-the-art filtration and we keep 5 baby cichlids in there.

Someone on Craig's list was giving away baby pseudotropheus socolofi. I decided that the nitrogen cycle had not been established in the aquarium, the babies' bioload would be no threat to their health. As the babies grow, the filter will become biologically established and noone will be the wiser. When they are grown up, I have found a cichlid hatchery in Homestead (FL) that will gladly sell us the same species for a reasonnable price. Then, we'll be able to introduce those newcomers to a fully established aquarium without worries.

Meanwhile, we dote on these 1/2 inch babies and the world spins gently upon its axis. Cichlids are incredibly "intelligent". They can already tell who feeds them (me) and who doesn't (Gail). They're a riot.

Take care, all.

Glad you are enjoying your "babies", Sylvain. Because my koi required so much attention I gave them to the next door neighbor that has a replica of the San Antonio RiverWalk in her yard. Mike has had more than enough to care for in me and didn't need to have fish as well. She feeds from her hand so they are more than happy.
Probably get some babies from her next spring. At least I can visit them next door.

Got to google "chiclids".

aah...that reminds me Sylvain,
When my brother and I were in The Gambia, we use to catch Cichlids in the Lagoon. "Jewel fish". I would agree on their intelligence, they were clever little buggers to catch. We had an aquarium that we put them in. There was another tropical fish ..I've never seen them here for sale, but they were about the size of swordfish, and were very shimmery with specteral rainbow colors as the light hit them. Tails similar to guppies.

We used to see more aquarium in doctors' waiting rooms. That helped keep a serene atmosphere among the patients waiting while their doctor smooched free samples from pharmaceutical representatives, instead of seeing their patients. At least, you could take an interest in the goings-on in the aquarium.

Now, they have done away with aquariums to install TV screens blaring the latest ads for imaginary diseases like Restless Leg Syndrome and the heartbreak of psoriasis. That caters mostly to hypochondriacs and people with not enough to do with their lives.

When I offered a series of the American Orchid Society's magazine for the nurse to leave in the waiting room, she had to get the doctor's permission. When I returned a few weeks later, I couldn't find the magazines anywhere. Apparently, they put them out for patients to read and they were stolen. Nobody stole the fish in the aquarium. No wonder the waiting room is always stocked with a wide array of at least 8-year old Selections of Reader's digests lying around. People don't steal those.

Take care, all.

Have just completed reading this entire threa. Hard to believe it covers only a few weeks as so much history has been made during that time. Most impressive that of the passing over of Hurricane Ike.
It was so much worse than what anyone was anticipating. RJ got power back only yesterday (Friday, 9/26) Jeanne had lots of damage to her garden and many others that I haven't mentioned did as well.

I must have been in a worse fog than I realized because most of the posts I didn't even remember. WHAT A GLORIOUS GROUP YOU ARE!!!! Yes, I am shouting it from the rooftops. I'm quite sure that the reason for my quicker recovery is due to all the good wishes from each of you.

The last two days have been a contrast. Left the house at 8:30AM yesterday and didn't get back until 8:30PM with lots of activity in between. Today I have slept all but 2 hours. Couldn't get awake no matter how hard I tried. That is all without meds. Hope I can sleep tonight.

Just want each of you to know how special, special you are.

God bless you,

You are special to us as well Christi! Hope you are feeling better.

I am beginning to get a little stronger. I went out into the garden today for awhile. It is still so disturbing to see things so battered. Come Spring, I'm sure they will come back nice and rested.

Been trying to figure out how to "over winter" some of the more delicate house type plants if we do not get another canopy. We have a swingset that can serve as an "A" frame for plastic. I saw one of the other DG'er's do it last winter. It's a thought. I'd bring some of them inside...but I have cats. They like to nibble on anything green. I guess I could bring them into my room and the master bath.

In a few weeks we'll know more what is happening, and we shouldn't have a freeze until Nov. or the first of Dec. so we should be OK.

Randy once said that his attitude in the garden was "It's like moving furniture". Well I guess it's time to move the furniture in the garden! Who knows, maybe I'll even like it better than before. I'm trying to stay positive!!!

I keep telling myself that "It WILL look good again!. It just takes time!"

Our home is intact, so we have much to be thankful for. Just a few minor repairs and it will be good as new!

Have a great day tomorrow y'all!

Tgal. Don't know if it is possible or not, but, two years ago about this time I found a screened canopy at HD on an out-of-season sale for only $89.00 It is 14x14 and I have really enjoyed it's use. I was lucky that it was at the store nearest my house. It has a hole or two in it now thanks to the squirrels but still works pretty good. I will probably get a lot of flack for being such a grouch but our paper has an article today of volunteers in Houston feeding up to 10,000 baby squirrels. Would they feed baby rats? Both are rodents and do considerable damage to a household. Vet told me I could never be completely rid of fleas in my yard as long as we have squirrels.
The bushey tail rather than the long skinney tail seems to make difference to a lot of people. We deal with their destruction all the time.

Going to birthday party for great-grandaughter to day. She is 2. Wonder what kind of world is ahead for her.

Just got off the phone from Carol who gave me so many good tips on the Bokashi...what a sweetheart!

So glad to hear of your good results, Mary - I have my first lot "cooking" now! Can't wait for the two weeks to be up - it hurts to throw the table trimmings onto the compost pile when I could (and will soon) be pickling it. I bought the bran as a starter and was rather horrified that it cost $55.00 here on Island (others on the mainland paid around $15.00), and it was full of boll weavils to boot. Those that didn't escape by running up my arms got mixed in with the EMI as well - Lord! I might just end up with boll weavils on steroids!

Pu'ole, I would say that poi is an aquired taste, it doesn't do much for me but I have learnt to somewhat like it as it is served at every luau here and it is the pride and joy of many Island Aunties, so one eats it and enjoys it anyway! There is a very interesting thread on the Bokashi about making balls of the stuff and using it to neutralize the waste that fish produce, but I rather expect that you keep your aquarium pristine, unlike my garden ponds - gotta try that too...Katiebear is presently clearing the streams going into the Baja with Bokashi balls among many other things.

So many mad scientist things to do, and so little time...

Aloha to all.

Hi all!

We are still in the reorganization phase. Probably won't replace the canopy until Spring. Planning on covering the swingset frame with plastic for some of the plants for the winter as a "makeshift green house". I saw it done by one of the DG'ers last year, it'll work.

The yard crew came back again Thursday so most of the actual "clean up" has been done. With no canopy we have a lot more sun on the patio so things had to be moved to a more shaded area. At least with the crew cutting back the Mexican Fan Palms there was room under them to put other "house plants", temporarily. Most of them will have to be "over-wintered" under the swingset.

The patio area has been defined by the Hawaiian Schefflera on both sides and then Majesty Palms on the front edge. That is temporary as well, as we usually store the majesties in between the house, shed and fence for the winter...but that is still a few weeks away, and we have a little more organization in that area before anything else can go there...

Some of the distressed plants that I had gotten from Lowes for $1.00 each awhile back could not take the added stress of IKE (wind and rain), and then the heat of no canopy. The got cooked.

Randy has a wonderful attitude that has stuck with me, and I repeat to myself often...He was originally talking about papaya seedlings and trees. He said, "Some things you have to treat like annuals." So that is my thought on the things that were lost.

The Bible says (paraphrased) "Some things are for but a season"...

Most of the plants that I treasure the most...my many banana trees, Palms, Hibs, Brugs, Plumies, pineapples, etc. made it. Those that didn't are in the minority and can be replaced. There'll always be more plants marked down at Lowes!

Some things will be different about the garden. I guess it's a time for a new beginning. Preparing for the winter just came a little earlier than normal. It's all good. We are blessed.

Jeanne, so glad to read how your garden clean up is coming along, it sound as if you have been really busy. I just know it will be prettier than ever next year, and I was so pleased to read that your favorites made it through all the winds.

Did your Mom's place have a lot of damage too?

Jen, No, Mom's yard had a very large branch down in the back yard, but that's all. She has a few daylilies under one tree, and they were fine. No roof damage that we can tell. She just had a brand new roof put on last year.

We went thru this after Rita, but at the time the Canopy was brand new and could be repaired. It took awhile, but the garden was back eventually, and that is how it will be this time. It's just discouraging seeing things battered, and then stripped when it was so LUSH three weeks ago. However, with all the work the crew did now there shouldn't be as much to do in the Spring, that's for sure!

The shed hasn't been reseated yet, but plants had to be moved to even get to it, so it's one step at a time. It was hard to know where to start. It's coming together.

Our homes are structurally sound, and we are all fine, and that is what is important.
Our prayers go out to those that lost everything, and or family members. The death toll in Galveston keeps growing, and the number missing growing also.

Again, we have much to be thankful for!

Raining here for the third day and we have had over 10 inches so far. While wandering around DG I came upon this thread and really didn't remember very much about it. This past year has been both good and horrendous. Of course, we all know now that Ike almost took Galveston off the map and many of our very best friends have had a struggle rebuilding. I am truly grateful to all of you for the many prayers and good wishes as, we, like the geese, can't get through this life alone. Saw the surgeon a few weeks ago and am officially released. Would never have believed that I could be this healed with an 8 inch ladder installed along my spine. MIL is 91 and she fell and broke her ankle 3rd week of March. She spent 4 months in hospital and rehab and is now home again. April 14th was the darkest day of my life. Our 25 year old grandson, Aaron, drowned. Many of you already know this and have once again "flown to the ground" with me to stay until I am once again able to fly. Today is Mike's birthday and we are resting in our nest. I'm sure many of you have had both good and bad experiences this past years as that is the fabric of life.

Never did explain several hours after surgery Mike was my nurse and heard the "death rattle". Called for help and code blue was the result. Causes one to contemplate just how fragile the thread of life truly is. The magic of the internet has brought me into the presence of people who are the best of the best. I am lucky to have you at my side.

Greetings from sunny Florida.

Christi, this is the first thread I consulted this morning and BAM. Right there, Jen (BHM), is telling you are going under the knife. I pretty nearly fell of my chair! I told myself "Dear Sweet Precious Lord, has she not been through enough since last year?

My heart broke and a big lump formed in my throat. Then, I realized I had forgotten to check the date, August 6, 2008. I realized my mistake and came to my senses . May you keep goofing off with us on DG for a very long time to come.

Here's a picture of me in my aluminium foil hat to keep the aliens from reading my thoughts.

Big kisses.

Christi, so glad that you are doing well!

We're OK. Yesterday I wanted to go to MAAS Nursery in Kema / Seabrook area as they used to have a beautiful carved wooden macaw on a swing that I wanted to get for the patio. Fortunately we called ahead and they said that they had lost everything in Hurricane IKE, so we didn't go. They have replenished alot of their stock but not that.

I found a couple of red macaws on a ring online but they were not as pretty as the one down at Maas Nursery on the swing. I guess I'll wait and get one next Spring. I can still watch around here until then. Awhile back I got a red figurine for the table at Hobby Lobby. I could look there also.

Galveston is slowly being rebuilt, so I might be able to find one down there also.

We finally got the old wishing well painted a light brown. Now it needs glued together and a new floor. Little by little the garden is coming together.

My Mom has shingles on her face. Please keep her in your prayers.

Be sure she takes Neurontin or whatever else they are giving now. I had shingles last summer just before the surgery. Very painful. You might consider getting the vaccination, too late for me. My nephews 5 and 7 have had chicken pox last couple of weeks even though they had the vaccine for children. The virus on the run right now.

Will definitely be praying for her.

westraad, I have been absent from the TZ for awhile. So glad to know we have a new friend. My attitude has not been good since loosing my grandson. I am often ashamed to be so selfish when I know I am not the only one who has great grief. I shall stay away from the subject in the future.

We have had a brutal summer with some 30+ days over 100 and no rain. Two weeks ago tomorrow it started raining. Since then we have gotten 17 1/2 inches. Way too much in such a short time for this area. Lots of flooding all around us but we were never in danger.
The brugmansia's have drooped in certain beds because of too much water so that gives us heads up on what needs to be raised with more soil. Other tropicals are relishing the humidity and growing like mad now that we have reached the Fall Solstice. Helps prepare the roots for the inevitable freezes that will soon follow.

Are you from Mozambique or did you move there? You will see I am a nosey one. Always wanting to know more about my friends. Since I am smack dab in the middle of Texas, you might ask what I am doing on this thread? Because I have many wonderful friends here. We love each other.

Hi Christi,
Oh, it is so hard to lose someone you dearly love! it is understandable that you don't understand why, Christi, and i am no counsellor. all i can say is that i am so, so sorry about your loss, and that i keep you in my prayers.
i don't mind at all answering your questions, i'd love to actually. i am a south African with a Dutch heritage, fifteen years old. my family and i have been missionaries in mozambique for the past 11 years, and we work with the children here who are the most neglected. Mozambique is a poor country, yet very beautiful. it was in civil war for many years, until it ended in 1993. the government now is extremely corrupt. But i am glad we are living here, we enjoy it very much. South Africa is not a third world country, but is actually very developed. but we will never return, our home country has changed too much. it has an extremely high crime rate, the latest statistics show 18,000 people are murdered a year, mostly whites. the burglaries have risen by 45% in the last year. it actually has the highest crime rate in the whole world. and next year they are going to hold the World Soccer Cup here!
well, feel free to ask any more questions, and i also have made wonderful friends on this forum, the folks here are great.

Hi Christi,
thank you for your prayers.
Yesterday was such a good day for me, i had three friends visiting me. one was from Texas, another from South Africa, and another who lives here. we had a nice swim in our pool, and then went down to the beach. i had had malaria this last weekend, so was too active, and i so tired last night i didn't get onto DG at all!
beautiful granddaughter! my mom LOVES ballet! she used to do it when she was a teenager, but was in a car accident and broke her back, so she had to stop. even now my mom has a lot of back problems, but she still loves to watch ballet movies, etc.
i am going to be 16 on the 14th of October, looking forward to that. i asked my parents if we could go visit the botanical gardens in Maputo for my birthday, but i don't know if that will happen. its 3 hours away from here, and it in the week, but we will have to see!
i will post a picture of myself next time, so you can see what i look like, i just don't have a recent on on hand now.
hope you all enjoy your day!

Have read of your struggle with recurring malaria on other threads. No wonder you don't gain weight. But then young men don't usually "fill out" until in their twenties. Not to worry.

I do homeschooling, and i enjoy it. the curriculum i use is A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education). it originates in the USA, but its all over the world. have you heard of it before?

Thank you, Isaac. Knowing people from all over the world has helped to expand my knowledge even my ripe old age. I will be 68 in October so I can assure you I am not a predator. I liken the internet to the old days when people had pen pals that went by snail mail. I am familiar with ACE. One of the daycare centers that is being considered for my 3 year great-granddaughter teaches by their principles. What is your main interest in your studies?

Hi, everyone.

Good picture, Isaac.

Christi... good one: you're not a predator! Who would have thought? We must all be very careful with the internet, as everyone knows. Ten years ago, Gail went on the internet to find a knitting/crocheting pal. She found someone who called herself Georgina. They exchanged email for a while, then phone numbers. I knew nothing about this. Then one morning at breakfast, Gail announces that she has made arrangements to meet this Georgina in an italian restaurant on Fridays, 2 days from now. I was weary and curious. I asked the usual questions:
How do you know her? Internet.
Have you met her before? No.
Where does she live? Not far from here.
Where does she work? Not far from here.
What does she do for a living? I don't know.
Will you meet her alone? Yes. We're going for dinner at Galleo's.
Does she drink? I don't know.
Does she smoke? I don't know.
Does she have children? No, just a small ankle biter dog.
What else do you know about this person? Nothing except she knits and gives away her work to charity, like me.
Is she a serial killer? No.
Is she a predator who will kidnap you and sell you into slavery? Oh, don't be silly.
What else do you know about her? Nothing.
You've given this a lot of thought, I see? Yes.
You're kidding, aren't you? No.

Not wanting to fly into a conniption frit, I countered by telling Gail that she wouldn't meet a stranger at Galleo's alone. Georgina could come for supper at OUR house on Friday after work. I would prepare the meal and leave them alone to discuss yarn, knitting needles, patterns, etc. If there was anything suspicious about this meeting, the alleged Georgina wouldn't show and that would end it right there.

So, I fixed an italian dinner and Georgina arrived at the exact time indicated. I answered the door to come face to face with this 5 feet 11 inches woman built like a brick house carrying 2 bags of yarns and finished projects. I welcomed her into our home and came straight out with it: I would assess if she was a serial killer, a predator or a sex maniac. We all laughed, except Gail. She doesn't have much of a sense of humor.

We became fast friends. I was speaking to her a few days ago and she asked me if I had finally come to a decision about her proclevities. I told her the jury was still out on that one. She will be visiting us in November for a week. I can't wait. This turned out well but it could just easily have turned sour, had I dropped Gail at that restaurant the first night.

Now, Isaac... I have known Christi for a while now. We have never met in person (maybe next spring) but I did talk to her on the phone. She sounds like a nice person and I almost certain she is, too. I guess I'm the one everyone should be concerned with: the polar bear living in Florida. Who ever heard of such a thing? Be afraid, be very afraid.

Take care, all.
Sylvain.

hahahaha! Oh Pu'ole I do love you so. Always good for a laugh. Remember, I did go to Braveheartsmom in Feb. 08 with DH and we stayed a week. Sight unseen, only friends from DG. Now I have a friend for all eternity. Her mother, DH, DS were there as well and it was if we had known each other forever already. The fall before that we drove to Houston to pick up IslandShari and her DH from the airport as they had arranged a stopover for just the purpose of us meeting. That is 228 miles one way. We met at RJudd-Harrisons home and Jeanne77TX came to meet all of us. That is now a hard and fast relationship. RJ has since been here for a long weekend. Sheila_Ft.Worth and Mibus2 have both been here numerous times and I have visited Sheila, about 45 miles from here.
Last November, shortly after I was again mobile from surgery there was a BIG SURPRISE.
Broncbuster, Sheila, Josephine, and PBTX were here to "put the garden to bed".

This coming Spring, IslandShari will once again be passing through. She is coming from the Marshall Islands to see her parents in Brownwood Texas. Planning to stay over at my home for a couple of days. The Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, Sylvain and Rj will be here too. Going to put out an open invitation to any others that want to fly, drive, walk or crawl. After five years of talking with my gardening buddies on DG I have found everyone to be of sterling character.

Sylvain, so glad Gails adventure turned out so well. Just think of what she would have missed had you not been your usual gracious self and cooked dinner for them.

Oh how could I forget. While on Maui at Jen's , Carol, AlohaHoya flew from her island to go on the whale boat with us. Another wonderful person in every way.

Sylvain you were right to be cautious. You do have to be careful especially in this day and age. So far everyone I have met has just been wonderful.

Mother is very weak, but her spots are few and starting to scab over. Her eye and mouth are still very painful. The shingles are in her blind eye, so that is actually a blessing. Isaac, so nice to see a picture of you - and what a lovely spot you have there in your garden. I am enjoying hearing all about your life in Africa, and I hope you are feeling better.

Lovely, as always, to hear from you our polar bear!

Jeanne, where have you been keeping yourself? I hope your Mom is feeling a little better now - have all of you had the shingles shot? I think you have to be 60 to have it, but well worth doing - it's a rotten thing to get. Give my love to Mom.

Hi, Jen. Actually the last two summers Payton has gone to specialized ballet schools. This past summer she stayed in a sorority house at UT Austin and went to yet another juried class for 4 weeks. Some 200 miles from home. She has outgrown her teacher and the teacher arranged another audition and she is taking lessons 5 days a week at The Texas Ballet Company. Her mother is a doll as it is some 40 miles from home and she sits for 2 hours everyday while Payton is in class. She gets out of school 1 period early as this counts as PE. She really won't be 15 until Jan. Even better she makes high grades and has very good morals. Her dad, our son, lives in Tulsa, OK some 250 miles from her but he flies her back and forth and they talk on the cell several times everyday of the world. They are probably closer than many parent/child that live in the same household. How does that sound for a very proud grandmother.

Well, Isaac, I can't speak for everyone who reads these lines. At the top of this thread are the thread's frequentation statistics: 2,396 views against 333 posts. So only 1 person out of 7 actually writes something and keeps the thread going. As I was saying, I can't speak for all those people but you look like a nice enough gentleman. Concentrate on your studies, school and remaining as healthy as you can. When I was your age, almost 40 years ago, I was a hunk with hair all the way down to my shoulders and a smile that would melt granite. It actually interfered with my studies. I had to beat the girls away with a stick; LOL.

We come in all shapes and sizes. You complain that you eat a lot and don't beef up. I don't eat that much and I look like a blimp. I actually gain weight watching cooking on TV. But that's another story. We like you for who you are, in a totally non-judgemental way. For sure, you are the youngest member here. You'll keep us young and thank you for that. With the internet, the global village gets smaller every day. Who knows, maybe one day you'll come visit us in the US and we'll get a chance to meet face to face. That's always a wonderful thing for us.

Take care, all.

A friend of mine left this vanda orchid in my care and it bloomed yesterday. I am surprised because vandas and me don't usually see eye to eye.

Take care.

Christi, i would say you have reason to be proud. your granddaughter must be very talented. i am sure you are very proud that she has good morals. growing up in a stablized Christian family here has taught me a lot about morals, and i am so thankful for the discipline and the rules my parents give me. earlier today there were 4 guys my age here, and i have to say, i was more than glad to see them leaving! all they think about is girls, and their language is less than desirable. when the one saw a packet of basil seed in my room he said, "What the heck are you doing with this in your room??" i said, "well, i do gardening. its my hobby." judging by the look he gave me, i just might as well have said i came from Mars! Anyway, i am thankful that i live here in Mozambique, though i am a little isolated, i don't have to deal with bad influences from school, etc.
Christi, i wonder if you would mind posting a picture or two of your garden? i would love to see what it looks like. i always enjoy seeing other people's gardens. if you like, i can post some of our garden.

hi sylvain,
you posted while i was writing. thank you very much for the compliments, i am glad you guys like me. You indeed are a interesting and loveable person, i am glad to count you as a friend here on DG.
i do not like all my subjects in school, especially Math. i am not very good at it, and i don't like it. English i enjoy and do well at, though i don't like history! my two favorite subjects are Nutrition and Christian Growth.
i have never had the problem of having to bat girls away, thank goodness! :-) i have never had a girlfriend, and i don't date. i do want to get married one day, but i am trusting the Lord, that he will show me who and when.

Packing for a trip: one of life's little joys. After 24 cruises, I don't sweat the small stuff. I pull out the suitcases the day before we sail and fill them just before I go to bed. What I forget behind, we don't need; so there! I hope you have a great time.

I remember that thread when Shari visited 2 years ago already. How time flies. It feels like it was just a few months ago.

Randy, your spies are right. Even though I'm now 54 years old, very pleasantly plump, built for comfort, not for sport and my hair (what's left of it) is shaved down to the scalp, I still get sidelong glances from unknown admirers. Someone even threw her cabin's keycard at me during a karaoke session where I sang What a Wonderful World. What an ego booster.

Isaac, you seem to have your head screwed on right. I like that. As Electric Light Orchestra sang: Hold on Tight To Your Dreams. It's before your time (1981). Here's the link to it.

I am ready when you are. Usually we go to Mustang Island just across the causway from Corpus Christi. Decided to try the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a change. Hope we haven't made a mistake. We don't gamble...not interested. Have been hearing rumours that the oodles of tax money and the ooodles of donations are not evident. We'll see. At least it will make us thankful for our blessings. Staying in a condo as we do at Mustang Island.

Good Morning. We will be driving, weestraad. Closest I will be to the water is wading along the edge of the beach. When we go to Mustang, we must be very careful as there are always stingrays in the sand but worst of all jellyfish. Unless you walk above high tide area. The tide brings them in and they are stranded but can give a serious sting.

Wound up running erands yesterday and then picked up the young'un from daycare. She and Kelly stayed for dinner and watched part of the Cowboys with Mike. I went to bed.
She was 3 on Saturday and is truly a lot of fun right now. INDEPENDENT in all caps. Nothing like a baby or toddler to help cure your ills.

Now today, is not a choice. Must get busy. We leave early Thursday morning for two days one the road. It is a 12+ drive but we don't like to try to make it all at once. Besides getting there is half the fun. We have explored Louisiana in depth but there is always something more to see. I love their French. Sylvain you would feel right at home.

enjoy your time, Christi! i enjoy travelling, though i am the only one in our family, so we don't travel much. we do have stingrays here too, we rarely see them. what we do get often in bad weather are bluebottles (Portuguese men of war), those stings really hurt alot.

We get Portugese Man Of War here, too. As a matter of fact, I believe they are present in every ocean and sea in sub-tropical and tropical waters. They are just plain nasty. The blue sail can trail stinging tentacles for 20 feet on an adult specimen. People who get stung by them remember the incident all their life. I like to walk on the beach and step on the blue bubbles after they have washed ashore. I always wear waterproof beach mocassins or Crocs at the shore.

I just finished a bit of a chore here. When we changed the air conditionning unit, the workers stepped on the wire shelving in our bedroom's walk-in closet. So doing, they weakened the system and the whole works came crashing down Saturday. So, I picked up every stitch of clothing we own off the floor, salvaged whatever shelving I could, purchased the necessary parts to repair everything and re-installed the system. All in all, it took me 3 hours from start to finish: not bad.

It's not heavy work but it has to be done right the first time. A friend told me he would give me a hand with all that. He hasn't shown his face yet. It's just as well. The walk-in closet in our room is narrow and deep. There isn't that much space for anyone else when I am in there. We would have stepped on each other's toes. Still, a hand with such chores would be nice once in a while. I'm always ready to lend a hand but I work alone most of the time. Such is life.

Take care, all.

Ooooohhhh Pu'ole. If I were closer I would be happy to help you. Our whole closet is on the bed right now while we decide what to pack. Not really a big deal. When we used to travel by Motorhome, I would take no less than 30 pairs of shoes. I have had a shoe fetish my entire life. Luckily a 6B is real easy to find and often on sale. Since it is the official sample size, I often clean up when Ross's gets a new shipment. When I worked for Anthony, his shoe supplier would send me cases of 50 at a time.

Hey everybody!
did you all have a nice weekend? i had a long weekend off from school, gave me a chance to do some gardening. my friend Brian was also visiting most of the time, so we went snorkeling on Sunday. it was great, but just cold. i am so thin, that i when the water is a little bit cold, it seeps into my bones i really struggle to get warm! :-)
we also flew some kites, and my neck is so stiff today from looking up at the kites for almost 2 hours.
we played some board games, cluedo being my favorite. we decided to drop the table tennis for now, and are playing darts more often. my hand co-ordination is really bad, so i am not very good. but, as they say, practice makes perfect!
well, i have a busy day ahead, a lot of schoolwork. talk to you guys later.

Hello, everyone.

Busy weekend here. We entertained on Saturday so the house needed to be in its absolute cleanest, most pristine state ever. We endeavour to keep a clean house but sometimes we abandon stuff here and there; I don't know why. Anyhow, it was cleanup time plus cooking time and cleanup again after they left. It was fun but exhausting. Then, on Sunday morning, I needed to be out of here at 6:15 because I volunteered to help a nonprofit organization raise money to build an elevator in a disabled veteran's house.

The house is called Fisher House in West Palm Beach. It is a registered non-profit organisation 501(3)-C if memory serves. Basically, it is like a Ronald McDonald house where families stay while their veteran relative is in the hospital next door. We raised almost $7,000 that morning. People came in with lists of sponsors and cheques. Then, they walked 3 miles in their boots to earn the money that had been pledged to them. Everyone had fun and we only need another $8,000 to complete the project.

Like Isaac, I enjoy flying kites even at 54 years of age. Last year, Gail and I were at John U. Lloyd State Park in Fort Lauderdale. It was a beautiful day so I decided to bring the kite. I was minding my own business, enjoying my kite when a ranger came by and ordered me to bring that kite in NOW!!! It turns out kite flying is forbidden in that park. There are no signs anywhere but that's the way it is. Imagine that: no kites at the beach. What next? No getting wet at the beach, or no disturbing the sand at the beach. Stupid, idiotic people! I reeled in my kite and folded it away. He came back not only to make sure that I had stopped flying it but that it was stored in my car: absolutely no kites on the beach. Who knew kites could become weapons of mass distruction? Paranoid people will be the death of me, I swear.

Have a great day, all.
Sylvain.

Good Morning. We arrived in Gulfport Miss. Friday night. The devastation still evident from Katrina is awful. The news focused on New Orleans but that was a flood from poorly constructed levies. This is the real deal. No need to try to describe it to those in Florida, you have it first hand. It has been 4 years and is 2% recovered. Has taken all this time to clear the debris. With all the money that has been poured somewhere by donations it should be a gleaming new city. They are working very hard to achieve that but it is hard. Wonder what FEMA did with all that money. The attitude of the people is wonderful. Makes just want to hug everyone of them. There is a week long gathering of people who restore cars. We are right on the beach and can watch from our balconey as they
"cruise". Since we are very senior we used to drive a lot of these ourselves. Still most beautiful car in the world is the '57 Chevy. It is a sight to behold. Only went to one casino for just a short while...Hard Rock Cafe. Had to look around and say we had been there. We aren't gamblers so didn't do much damage.

Gonna check into a 4 hour ocean ride today. Later, friends.

lol, Sylvain. maybe they have a reason for the kite's ban, i can think of one. i almost hit someone in the head by accident while trying to do some tricks, it was a close call! maybe they are afraid inexperienced flyers will hurt other people, but i do tend to agree with you. it is ridiculous! :-)
hello, princess Kilikina!! i am so glad you are enjoying your trip. i have heard a bit about Katrina, read a fiction novel about it by Tim Downs. i didn't realize though it was still so bad.
we had major flooding here back in 2000, and it is only now that the town has recovered. but not the ocean here. you see, what happened is this: the Limpopo river starts in South Africa, runs through Zimbabwe, and also Swaziland, i think. it runs into the ocean several kilometres from here. our neighboring countries received a lot of rain, and opened their flood gates. and where did the water go? right here! more than half our town was covered, and so many people died. due to the flooding, a lot of mud from the river destroyed the ocean life. fishing is bad around here. after the flood there was hardly anything left. it has been coming back very slowly, but the locals catch everything. what maddens me the most is when they strip off all the coral, we have so little! thankfully the government has been stricter lately, though i think it will be years before the ocean life returns to what it was before.

Hi Sylvain,
sorry it took me so long to respond. our study has been under a bit of construction, still not quite done, some painting left. but its good enough to move back in a bit!
yes, mankind has caused a lot of trouble for our planet.
we are nonprofessional missionaries, meaning we work part time and do missionary work part time. My father used to own a sawmill and construction business. but he sold both, because they took up all our time, and didn't leave any for our calling. we sold the sawmill in January, and have been taking a rest until now. my parents have been praying a lot, asking God to lead them in His will. it looks like we are going to start an egg business now, still finding out about the particulars. but we believe its the direction the Lord is showing us.
my sister is the only one who is full-time in missions.

Apologize for sounding so gripey. The wildlife and nature are beautiful. It is just such a shame what mankind is doing to destroy it. The vintage cars now number around 8,000 and counting. What a sight to behold. Mike is going nuts wanting one. His stepdad owned a used car lot in the 50's and early 60's so Mike got to drive everything.

I didn't take pictures this time. The devastation from Katrina is still so overwhelming I didn't want a record of it. These people are wonderful and beautiful and are working so hard. Has taken 4 years to even clear the debris. It has rained a lot and often. Katrina went for miles and miles up and down the coast and waaaaay inland. What the hurricane didn't get, the tornadoes that spun off did. We have greatly enjoyed the vintage cars. Must be over 8,000 all up and down the coast. 13th year of "Cruisin' the Coast". Just a coincidence that we were here at the same time. Best seafood I have ever had in my life. I shall not weigh for 3-4 weeks after I get home and that will be after a strict diet. hahaha

See ya on the curve,...
