Help! We have an 8 foot section of 55+ year old cast iron drain pipe that is crumbling and leaking. Yesterday, the plumber came and told me (DH was playing golf) that we would have to replace all the cast iron pipe from the kitchen and bathrooms to the sewer line to the tune of $16,000. He stated that if he replace the 8 foot horizontal section, the rest of the plumbing from the second floor could collapse down. Anyone have any insights into cast iron pipe replacement? Do we really need to replace everything and cut into the walls?
