This is a 2 drawer chest I got years ago at a garage sale. I finally got around to doing something with it. I painted it all white, then painted flowers on the front and side and did a mosaic on the side.

Thanks for the compliment Kim. I do enjoy tinkering but had not done any for quite a while until I did these 3 things. I also did a bowling ball with flat marbles the other day. The clear glu hasn't dried completely so the picture isn't very good. Maybe later I will post a different picture of it.

I'm not new at trash to treasuring things, but completely new to mosaic. I too want to know how to grout and what to use. I get the impression that you glue your mosaic tiles, or jewels down on a surface and then rub grout in between everything...Is this right? Please let me know, I'm anxious to begin mosaics and figure there are some experts here, LOL!

Audrey & Karen, I used regular flooring tile glue on the chest but got some glue that dries clear that was good for most anything on the stools. I am afraid I threw the empty bottle away and am having a "senior moment" so can't think of the name. I just bought a tube of GOOP Sport and Outdoor glue to try next. I used half glass marbles on one table and stained glass pcs. on the other. You are right, you glue your pcs. in place, let dry according to glue directions and then apply the grout. You can get grout at Lowes, Home Depot, Menard's etc. I don't know about Wal Mart but you can google it to see. For the projects I have done I have used unsanded grout. You can get either and there are different colors or you can buy a grout colorant. I used Mosaics by Plaid (also from a garage sale) but think they also have it at the building supply places. There is a site on DG for Mosaics & Stained Glass where you can learn from those who have more experience. I am just messing around with it. It is fun for sure.

This is in response to an August thread . . .
I have the match to your wonderful 2-drawer mosaic-ed dresser! See pic. This is a table I got for 2.00 at an auction some time ago. We got the tile pieces for free at a tile plant. The table had a rim around it already; all I had to do was raise it a bit so there was a nice area for the tiles.
I've been having fun reading old threads from the T to T forum. It's comforting to know there are other people like me 'out there'!!

Samigal!
The day I bought that table at an auction, a man there told me I could find free tiles laying on the ground at a tile plant some miles from our home. So we went there and, sure enough, they let us roam their back lot for broken tiles. They also had defective tiles and 'seconds' that could be purchased for very little money.

Samigal: Fatwray! I didn't notice that till you pointed it out to me! Too funny!
Yes, we did buy some fancier tiles at that tile plant (1.00 each). I wanted to at least spend some money there since they let us take the ones off the ground for free.
Originally, I had all those tiles laid out in a pattern. Then when I started to transfer them onto the actual table, it was impossible to keep my design intact! I AM glad I had all the flowers pre-planned, but the green 'leaves' had to be put on randomly in the end.
One final note about that tiled table: I had those tiles glued to that table for weeks but hadn't grouted it. Then one day my husband took that table out onto the front porch and plopped a huge pile of wet grout onto those tiles, thus forcing me to grout it! What a hoot! He surely knows how to motivate me!!!

I guess that is one way to get the table grouted, but I may have been a little irritated at him at first. I've got a small table, not in the best of shape that I want to use for practice. If it doesn't turn out very good I'll stick it some where in the yard for plants. I had this huge round mosic table years ago that someone threw out and I'm so sorry I didn't keep it and brought it along when we moved. It was very heavy and someone did beautiful work on it. It would have been perfect for the back yard.

I was sitting here reading your message this morning and thinking, 'Wow! I wish I knew what month I worked on that table so I could find a better pic in the archives to send to her!' Duh! I finally realized I could just take a new pic of it; after all, that table is in our living room! So I'm sending you another pic of the table with this message.
As with any project, I have to ask myself, 'Would I do this again?!' And companion to that question, 'If I did that again, would I do anything differently?'
I know someone who painted pieces of rock and laid them in a flower pattern on the ground, in cement. Perhaps I could try that sometime . . .
Then there's the person who laid pebbles in a pattern in cement in her garden. I have a pic of that somewhere too . . .
I think the thing I like best about tiling is the longevity factor: These are items that will stand the test of time!!
PS: In the pic you'll notice another T to T rpoject: I painted two old trellises black, magnetized the wall and hung the trellises over the magnetized area. I can now change out pics willy-nilly.

Thanks!
I got those trellises for 1.00 each, as I recall, from a yard sale.
On decorating shows, I'd learned about a product that magnetizes walls . . .
So I went on-line and found it. I ordered some metal shavings, essentially. It cost - again, as I recall - 15.00, and that included the shipping. (Er, it might've 15.00 plus 5.00 shipping.)
The manufacturer recommended mixing that metal powder in with oil-based primer. So that's what I did.
I thought, 'Hm. Oil base? Won't that take forever to dry?' (I wanted to get that project done quickly, you see.)
But the thing is, oil-based paint is apparently not what it used to be: it dried in @ 1/2 hour! Amazing!
I had marked out the area the trellises would cover, and painted that metal-laden primer onto that area. Then I painted over the primer with the wall-color paint and afixed the trellis over the area - with small finish nails.
Now it was ready for pics. I got strip magnets from Hobby Lobby and cut them to size. The magnets become the frames, you see . . .
Then I put any pics I wanted to put there on a disc and took the disc to the library. I dropped those pics, one at a time, into a Word document and edited them to the right size and cropped as -needed, too.
Voila! All I had to do then was cut the pics to-size and stick them on the wall with the magnet strips.
I hope I explained that right . . .
Oh, oh! One other thing: At our local library, you can make 10 copies for free, per day; after that, copies are 10 cents each.
The beauty of this whole thing is that I can change pics whenever I want.
Oh, and one last thing: Our grandson told me his pic wasn't on that wall enough times! So I plan to someday fill every one of those 30 spaces with pics of him, just to tease him! It IS hard to pick just 30 pics, but, there again, you can change them out easily.

I hesitated to share that magnetic project because I don't know if one can go offf-topic in this forum. But then I realized it WAS on-topic since it was made with a trellis!!
Hey! I might go off-topic, now, though: I just found a cool lampshade at the local S&A Boutique. (That's Salvation Army Thrift store.) My husband gave me some money and told me to buy myself some clothes, and I found a lampshade!
I've never seen a lampshade like this one - it's nacre/mother-of-pearl, leaded with brass?

Arejay: I had a great time thinking about how to answer yorur question 'What else do you make?'
One of the projects that really exemplifies my style - simple, easy, quick - is this one: I found old wooden cassette holders at a garage sale for 25 cents each and framed the garage door with them! I plan to include a picture.
Here are some of the projects I've done. Let me know if you want pics of any of them:
I stained curtains by adding 400 tea bags to my washing machine . . .
And made a planter with an old brass bingo thingie . . .
And made a patio out of old brick and stone . . .
And made a wallpaper-type border out of copies of a scan of a real daisy from our garden. . .
And designed and built a huge shelving/desk unit out of MDF . . .
And I recently crocheted some totes out of strips of fabric . . .
By the way: I'd never heard of copper blinds either. When I spotted one of those in the SA one day, I was so stunned by it that I stopped a stranger in the aisle, 'Wow! Is this copper?!'
I quit!
Oh, I almost forgot: I like to sew. I think I now have 7 sewing machines!! I've been looking for a sewing partner for many years. Anyone interested???

When our oldest son told me one of his co-workers wanted to get rid of some old stone and brick, I was all over that idea! That was two winters ago. We could not get that brick and stone because it was too cold. Then, finally, my husband arranged for transport and we went and loaded it up in a jiffy and brought it home and dumped it in the yard. Since I didn't want the yard to be ruined, I flew into action and had that patio laid in @ 8 hours. My husband, meanwhile, kept saying, 'Wait till tomorrow and I'll help you!' (This, as I was placing stones in the ground late one night!) But I kept at it. So the next day, he goes golfing. By the time he got home, I'd been working for hours on that patio, laying it with just a hand trowel, stone after stone, brick after brick. So he comes home and makes me some dinner - and I ate it between stones! And then he decides to help me out further by turning on the truck radio so I could listen to music; he turned it on a rock channel. After about 5 minutes of this music, I deadpanned to my DH, 'Honey, could you please turn that radio off. I'm TIRED of rock!'
The thing is, I do know how to do a 'proper' patio - dig deep; put down a layer of gravel and then a layer of sand, yada yada. But I didn't do any of that; I just dug holes and plopped the stone into the ground. I told my dad one day, as we sat on that new patio, 'Ya know, daddio, some day I might have the wherewithal to make a patio the 'right' way, but I will never enjoy a patio any more than I enjoy this one.'

That trim was easy to do. (I'm in love with wallpaper paste!) I scanned the pic, put a border around it and inserted two of these motifs into one document and printed @ a hundred copies of this at the library - for free, mind you. Then I cut out the motifs (motives?!) with my rotary cutter and glued them to a strip of paper bag paper, on a diagonal. Voila! Done! The pillow represents another of my recent 'passions' - working with silk scarves. Note: The table top is covered with black and white floor tiles.

I'm glad that sewing machine is out of the closet! Now you need some motivation!!
I am so very glad for the opportunity to go on-line and see the work of other fiber artists. For starters, do a search for 'Nancy Crow.' Then look for 'Gee's Bend.' Awesome quilts! Then do a search on Amazon for quilt books. If you find an author whose work appeals to you, go to his or her website . . .

I happen to like the homemade look. I once made a quilt for a woman - designed just for her - and when we threw that thing on her bed, she gushed, 'It's awesome! It looks like store-bought!' That was, like, the worst insult to me! I wanted it to look one-of-a-kind, and certainly not 'store-bought.' I made @ 50 cents/hour making that quilt for her; if she'd wanted a store-bought look, she should've gone to a store!!
Robin: Quilts can be complicated . . . or easy and quick to make; there are many options. (See pic of SEQ quilt - Simple, Easy, Quick, and, I think, quite stunning.)
PS: I like to make totes. They are a way of displaying your artwork for all to see, plus they're easy and quick to make. I can include pics of totes in the future, if you'd like . . .
Susan
Susan
PS: There are beau coup quilt books at your local library. I like to stand in the quilt-book aisle, flipping through book after book, while I ask myself, 'If I could have just one quilt out of this book, which one would I choose?' Surprisingly, there are many books with nary a quilt I would want to own. And that's good news: If those ugly, boring quilts can make it into books, then why can't mine?!!!

I would love to see your totes I collect totes I don't know what for and they aren't even used for anything but storing things in that I probably wont use but...I have a few. I don't think only your quilts in a book maybe a craft book even that would be most likely a coffee table book. The woman woman to whom you gave the quilt to shame on her!! Do you have a web site Susan? Thank you for sharing. I hope you find time to share more.

Katiebear my machine is a Kenmore, but I have a machine in a case in the closet that my son brought home some years ago, have to check it out. My sister has an old machine that belonged to my mom and that must be at least 70 years old. Never got the urge to do a lot of sewing, but give me a crochet hook and I sure can keep myself busy. Saving plastic bags because I want to crochet them into totes. Another project I can do sitting in front of the TV in the evening.

My older sister makes quilts and they are beautiful. She made me a queen size one years ago and I hate to use it and get it soiled, so after I learned what a duvet was I bought one and now am using the quilt on my bed.

Deb: Yes, those totes are crocheted. I use a huge, plastic crochet hook - maybe the biggest one on the market?
Robin! I once made a huge tote to give to a relative. Since I'm aware that some folks have no idea how to use a tote, I included a list of possible uses. I can't recall all the uses I came up with, but I do recall one suggestion: Store toilet paper rolls in it! It was a fairly rigid, you see, so it would stay open when you set it down - perfect for storing TP!! And I once made a lovely tote that I hung in the kitchen with potpourri in it!
Who am I kidding? I don't need an excuse to make a tote!!!
More pics to come . . .
Samigal: It's good to hear that you are using that quilt. What some folks don't realize is fabric deteriorates whether you use it or not. Why stash away a lovely quilt where no one can see it?
Robin: I love your idea of a coffee table book format. That is the sort of thing I'd put on my own coffee table. Great idea.
Which reminds me: My maternal grandmother used to tell the same jokes over and over again. It wasn't till years after her death that I realized why she did this: she liked to hear those jokes and since no one else was telling them, she'd tell them whenever she wanted a good laugh. ('Cantaloupe! I'm already married!') I mention this because I create certain things because no one else is doing the sorts of things I like to see. Since no one else is creating these things, it's up to me to do it!
Oh, and one more thing: I mis-typed when I wrote that fiber artists' work motivates me. I meant to say that their work inspires me. Duh! To get motivated, I remind myself of projects that are already done. I know, I know; it would seem like it would be more motivational to remind oneself of things that still need to be done. But I have found the opposite is true: If I think about things that are already done, it motivates me to do more things. Don't ask me why!
Ciao!
Susan
PS: You-alll are awesome. I mean that. The whole time I was at work this morning, I was reminded of your encouraging words. Thanks! I needed that!

Here's a second tote pic. The last two totes pics show a tote I designed around a basketball years ago. One of our sons' young friends came in while I was designing with this tote - I'm on the floor wrapping fabric around a basketball; picture it! - and he says, 'Cool! You're making a basketball carrier!'
Aaaah! Yet another use for totes. But not really. I just call it a basketball tote because of his comment. I've never carried a b-ball in one of them!!
Susan
PS: I'm finding that old mattress pads (SA: 1.00 on half-price day) make great padding for bags. A bonus: It doesn't have to be quilted to stay together.

Whoa! I almost couldn't find this T to T thread this morning! I thought I was going to have to go into mourning!
Do you think it would be a lot of pressure to produce ideas for a book? Just wondering . . .
I would've liked your grandma, Deb. And I love her name - Lydia Gaub.
I had an interesting conversation with my dad a while back. He announced that he was going to write a book. I was all over that idea, 'Dad! That's a great idea! Then I could read it and understand you better!' Then he says to me, 'You'd have to buy the book .. . . '
Well! I laughed, of course. But then I realized he has a point: My family and friends listen to my stories - sure they do - but they're surely thinking, 'Oh, this is just another one of her stories!' So I think it would be better to write a book and share those same stories under a pseudonym. Then (I laughingly told dad), those same folks would buy and read the book and finally get it - get the gist of the stories, get the reasons behind those stories.
As it is, they just think, 'Oh, another dumb Sue story.'
If I wrote under a nom de plume, they'd be coming to me saying, 'Hey, you have GOT to read this book!!'
Let me see if I can find another pic to share. By the way, I'm looking forward to seeing some more ideas from you-all . . .
Susan
PS: This pic shows our last home. When my husband moved some mulch one summer, he moved some morning glory seeds with it, apparently: we had morning glories coming up everywhere. So of course I had to 'help': I moved some of the young plants. I even put a string trellis on the telephone pole. I was all worried that the electric company would complain, but not to worry: when it come time to take down those vines the electric company offered to help us!! We lived on what is arguably the busiest corner in town and we had people stop as they rounded the corner, to comment about our yard. One guy stopped the flow of traffic one day to ask us if he could get some seeds from us! Everyone apparently thought we had some sort of 'magic' seeds! Too funny.

Susan, that is a great house. I look out my kitchen window to see an ugly brown telephone pole in my neighbor's back yard. At first she had beautiful climbing flowing there growing on some wire she had put up, but then one day she took it all down and I'm back to seeing this brown pole. I'd put a potted plant on top of the brick fence to help hid it, but the cats prowl along that fence and it would get knocked down. Need a T to T idea for that.

Well . . . since you twisted my arm, I do have something to share with you!!
This past weekend, when a friend was visiting from afar, we played in my sewing room.
I'd been meaning to try a couple of things and teased my friend that they were projects that required a friend to help in case I hurt myself - they could go for help!
The first project involved a drill and some yarns/cording/etc. We attached the ends of strands to an eye hook on the drill. (Instead of a drill bit we attached an eye hook, see.) Then we turned on the drill and twisted those strands till they became a cord. Cool!
I like the cord on the right (in the pic) best. It was made of strands of various cords and ribbons and bias tape. WAY cool. It passed The Blue Jean Test: Does it fit with my blue jean style?!!
We also worked out the details of how to box the bottom of a tote in just one step. If anyone is interested in hearing about this, I can elaborate . . .
Happy day!!!!

Close-up pic of loom, below.
If you've never seen this sort of thing, I have a challenge for you: Can you figure out how it's done? I'll give you a clue: There are holes in the bottoms of the pegs that fit into the larger board.
I found this technigue [for weaving] on-line, by the way. I had never seen it before. At first I didn't understand the concept. I was, like, Why are there holes in those pegs? But then a light bulb POP! went on and I suddnely saw it clearly. PS: My husband helped me drill the holes for the pegs. The long 'board' is really an oak banister piece that I got at a yard sale and brought home, thinking, 'I'll find a use for this somehow!'

Robin: I'm not into scrapbooking but I do like to use a binder with page protectors for displaying pics that I print at the library. You might use the same idea: Slip cards and letters and pics, etc, into page protectors and put them into the binder. I did this with old pics I scanned and printed for my mom's 80th birthday party last year. It was a big hit. That binder was passed around to the guests at her party.

Creative use of a fishing tackle box: the day after we left CA to live in Idaho my husband's best friend passed away unexpectly. Bob went back for the memorial but I had to remain here...in front of the gathering a table was set up with a dry stream bed running thru it with pine boughs and a picture of David...a fishing pole was leaned up against it and sitting on the bank was a brand new tackle box which contained David's ashes...My husband, Bob, said it was the most touching thing he had ever witnessed...thankfully Bob & David had taken a guided fishing trip shortly before that and we have a wonderful video of that...Bob & David had commercially fished for many years together & had hunted Idaho since the 1970's so this hunting season David's son came up from CA to spread his dad's ashes in the old hunting camp...we'll always miss him...Deb

I took the picture of the ugly brown phone pole that I see when I look out my kitchen window. At one time the neighbor had a lovely vine growing on it, but took it down a couple years ago. She does have an elephant ear plant growing by it, but doesn't grow tall enough to hide the pole.

Still having trouble remembering where I put my pictures. This old brain doesn't work too well any more.

Found this at the thrift store for about $1.50 and there really wasn't anything wrong with it. DH just hung it on the fence, so I could keep track of the weather. It is hanging on the fence in front of that ugly pole.

Lulie: We live @ 45 miles north of Columbus; we live near Marion. The last time I was anywhere remotely near your town was in 1979, when I was visiting my Aunt in Cuyahoga Falls, near Akron!
We ARE closer to you than the Ohio River Valley is, at least! I personally think that there are no other people living in the whole rest of the state besides us - and you of course; it's good to know that there's a town with people in it up your way!!

Deb: Awesome story about the tackle box.
Hm. Should I tell hubby that his tackle box idea has been challenged as the Most Creative Use of a Tackle Box?!
I once read a poem in an old copy of Sunset magazine . . . that went something like:
You know him as a businessman, in suit and tie . . .but I know him as a fisherman.
The poem went like that, giving examples of how other people might see that man, and ended each line with ' . . . but I know him as a fisherman . . .'
It was a beautiful poem, and it reminded me of my hubby. Too bad I didn't make a copy of that poem.
Thanks for sharing that poignant story, Deb.

That sunrise is awesome and the view across the field from your yard is to die for...lush greens and your beautiful blossoms, just makes me want to get a lawnchair & stay there forever...You are blessed by your surroundings...awesome inspiration...Thank you for the pictures...
I took a rug hooking class earlier this year. we hooked a small ornament and I've purchased more backing to design a pillow with...it is very restful to work on something like that, I just never find the time to sit down and do it. You guys give me so much inspiration, tho, just need to step out...our garbage dump here has a covered area with all sorts of "treasures" pulled from the trash for sale...just nominal pricing...I need to get my hiney up there...Thanks for the push...Deb

JuneyBug, be careful for what you wish for...for us to have this view we sit right out in the open on a bench above the canyon...hot, hot, hot...we have trees on the backside of our property only. What I really love is to watch the storms come in up the canyon...but when they hit us we have no windbreak..FayRay, our son's first job was as a deck boy on a party boat from the landing where we lived while Bob commercial fished. To this day he spends every moment he can fishing and his son, our grandson, is 5yrs old & has already caught a sturgeon as well as his first striper which they kept and cooked...he ate every bit and loved it...My husband would rather fish than sleep...I go along and read..I just can't kill anything...I do miss the days out on the ocean...we fished from Bodega Bay & out of San Francisco Bay back then living in the town of Tomales...it was a wonderful but poor money time of our life..Deb

I kind of know what you are talking about. We live it the Ozarks, right on Route 66. Folks from all over the world come here for the trout 'n the route, and the rivers to "float trip" on. They always tell us how blessed we are. After 13 years. I can say that it is, however, a loong way to any city. I currently drive 40 miles down the freeway to find a shoe or book store. I wanted to get some silverware re-plated. Oops, that is a 5 hour drive. And yesterday was the one year anniversary of 40 tornadoes hitting the area. I guess there are always two sides to everywhere.

The funniest thing: I think I enjoy looking at pictures of our garden(s) as much or more than looking at the real garden! I think that is due to my propensity to only see weeds when I'm near any of the plants in the summer. 'Oh, a weed! Better pluck it!' Then I see another one and then another . . . and I never do seem to find time to plop myself in a lawn chair!
Hey, but at least I've got the pics to enjoy . . .

PS: Juney Bug: No need to buy a home with a view; I'll share our view with you. Just drive (er, or fly) on over and maybe that will compel me to sit a spell!!!!

Is that scaffolding I see to the right of your picture? I still just can't get over your home with the morning glories...I wish the deer didn't eat them..I put them on the inside of our chain link fence but the deer just pull them thru and chomp, they're history...we have so many deer here so everything has to be fenced...they even eat "deer proof" plants right down to the ground...the datura is about all that escapes and that's only after they've nibbled it...I pulled up all my castor beans 'cause they were eating them & I couldn't bear to see them ill...Deb

Deb: That thingie to the right, in that patio shot, is an antennae tower! I re-looked at that pic and can see why you'd think it was part of a scaffold! Too funny!
Did you notice the trash cans too?! I want to build another outbuilding someday and not for the reasons you might think: I want a place to hide those trash cans!!
I'm sorry the deer are eating everything in sight. Ugh! Maybe you could grow a bunch of morning glories just for them!
I can't believe those morning glories either. When I look at those pics, I'm amazed. We really were out of control! We lived in that MG house for 6 years. Can you imagine how that yard woulda looked if we'd lived there longer?!

I like to read while our son fishes, too! I also do crossword puzzles and occasionally take creative projects to work on. And my camera; I have to take my camera to capture all that beauty.
Hey! I lived in Half Moon Bay for a while, back in 1979. Is that near Tomales? Talk about a view! That highway that runs through HMB is unbelievably beautiful.

Thanks arejay for the links. My sister did pottery for many years. She had her own wheel and kiln and made some great things. I still have a few pieces that I'll always treasure as she has given up wheel and kiln.

Now back to the pole, a few ideas here that I'm thinking about. The pole is in the neighbor's yard and she can't see it, but should take into consideration that I have to look at it. :-) Great ideas coming in, keeping in mind the can of paint and paint brush.

Hi a great thead never noticed it before .

Pegi been thinking about thate pole only thing I can come up with is out side your window put about 3 or 4 poles paint pattens on them and the big one might blend in with them and cement statues or things on top the brick wall if cemented cats can not knock them down .
Often building sites have plastic pipes of- cuts and timber to give away saves them having to dump it even broken tiles often all it costs is in summer have nice cold drinks to give them best to go there near finishing time a nice cold bottle of beer gets any thing you need. ----------Elaine.
