Another great article---it's obvious that you've set you self to write articles on most of the succulent groups. It's a worthy goal.
Here in Austin we have a native dasylirion, Dasylirion texanum or sotol. It likes our thin, alkaline soils found mostly to the west of Austin on the Edwards Plateau. In Austin we get about 31" of rain a yr, distributed in fall, winter, and spring---we generally have an extremely dry period for 3 months or so in summer. Summer temps are typically 95-105 for about 5 months. And our humidities are higher(not gulf coast high) than CA, or the Sonoran or Mojave deserts. I have 3 species in the garden: D.texanum, D.longissimum, and D.wheelerii---all are excellent plants here. I just make sure the soil is very well draining. And aside from Dyckias they are the WORST of all plants to work on, so I try to plant them in isolated splendor.
