These are beautiful. Thank you so much. My son is marrying next Aug. and his fiancee wants all homemade bouquets and floral arrangements. She is going to love these. I think they will be wonderful worked into her bouquet. We will be using all home grown flowers from her mother's, grandmother's and my garden. I cannot wait to show her this.
I have to move my lavender this fall. Will it still bloom as profusely as it did this year? I have moved it before, but cannot remember if it shocked or not. I always make sure I dig very deeply around the plant and get as much of the rootball as possible.
That's a wonderful idea to use them in a wedding! If they've lost their scent more than you'd like by the day of the festivities, just put a drop of lavender essential oil on the dried stems.
I've never had to move a mature lavender, so I'm not sure what to tell you about that. However, it doesn't take that many bloom stems to make these wands... :-)
Thanks for the tip on the lavender oil. If I can find enough people who have lavender in my area, maybe I'll make some for favors for the young girls at the wedding.
If you have any more neat ideas like this, please don't hesitate to post them. I'm getting all my friends together to take their 40 and 50% off coupons from AC Moore and Michael's and go purchase ribbons and lavender oil for me to use. My son and his fiancee are going to have the best smelling wedding.
About the lavender oil... a drop or two will go a long way, so don't think you need bottles and bottles of it! Make sure you get "real" lavender essential oil... I've run into some artificial stuff that's pretty unpleasant. I order essential oils from Lorann, and I think they're a pretty good deal, but a friend of mine and I usually order a bunch at a time and split the shipping, which helps.
You might consider handmade soaps, candles, etc. if you want to take the lavender theme further... JoAnn's is a good source for supplies (use one of those coupons on a big container of meltable soap... add color and scent when you melt and mold), and the Lorann site sells some good stuff too. It seems to me I've seen directions somewhere for working dried botanicals into the outside decoration of a pillar candle (or you could just tie on a sprig of lavender with a ribbon... nice on a lavender candle for a table favor?).
I just had to get back to you. I moved that lavender last fall and it is now twice as big as last year and is getting ready to bloom. It must really like the new spot. It is in full sun now and surrounded by phlox. I might have to remove the phlox by next year if the lavender gets any bigger. I will be making my wands soon, and I am going to take a look at the Lorann site for the lavender oi. Thanks again.
I'm glad your plant loves its new spot! I know you'll have fun making the lavender wands. My lavender is just starting to bloom, and we'll be cutting some bouquets tomorrow if the weather cooperates. :-)
