I grew up in an older house that had wood floors under the linoleum. I have been in at least one old house that had painted wood floors, which come to think of it may have been painted after being stained. No one recommends wood floors for the bathroom, however, the wood is tough, durable and doesn't have to be thrown out if it gets soaked.
Does anyone have any experience comparing the problems you have if the wood gets soaked vs. laminate getting soaked or vs. other materials? I have thought of rubber tiles but I have not found any with a reasonably long warranty.
My sis had a bad experience with laminate when her dog urinated in the house and she didn't know it. The liquid sat there for probably 3-4 hours. The seams 'swelled.' I had a washing machine hose break and the floor was flooded (I got it right away) and the Pergo was fine. I have wood floors in the bathroom (painted) and I have had no issues and I wash at least once/week (although I don't use a sopping mop or anything --just a wet swifter and sometimes chlorox /water solution on a sponge mop.
I lived in an old house with wood floors in the bathroom---now we put linoleum over it :( but through 6 kids spilling bath water on it and using the toilet when it was removed to expose the wood for laying new top flooring the wood still looked good---needed a refinish of course but the bones of the wood were still good except RIGHT around the toilet (but the bathtub area was fine!) and Dad just laid some new subflooring right around where the toilet was.
I think wood floors can work in a bathroom that's not used by the masses (try in a master bath) and especially if the toilet is in it's own little cubby with a door let's say as my house is now---you could choose a tile for the toilet area that matches in tones to the wood floor. Just a thought. Given the choice myself I'm still not sure which route I'd go.
Hello:
RE: wood floors. I found that wood floors are nice in the bthroom if you use hard wood, sand and stain or paint.
Trouble areas around the tub and toilet??? Can be a problem matching if need replacement.
I found howevr that acid stain (lots of colors) is the best way to go in a bathroom and even in the playroom.
What is acid stain? It is a stain that goes on Cement. I also acid stained my garage for a nicer look.
Nice throw rugs to match the decor is a pleasure to show off and to get a perfect look when you acid stain your cement
floors. Winter, seasons when the cement is cool, just use lots of throws.
It makes for a beautiful bathroom. Hope this helps.
