We're planning to cover the walls of one of our bathrooms with medium weight 100% cotton fabric.
We do not often use the shower in this bathroom; however this room also is our laundry center and in the winter we vent our dryer indoors using a system designed for this of a plastic container filled with water that the dryer hose blows into. The water traps the dust and humidifies the house.
Can you give advice on the best way to waterproof our fabric walls against this extra humidity?
new to this forum and a tile/marble/stone guy, however plenty of bathrooms (of other peoples') have I been in(!);
The product You are looking for is "Scotchgard" by 3M. Invented originally for NASA, it's really good stuff and used by
every automobile manufacturer, The North Face, Patagonia, etc., ad infinitum, mostly because it works. You'll need to hang the material over a rod in the garage, or other covered (but not enclosed) environment, it comes in a spray can & You should be able to get it about anywhere, starting w/Walmart/Target/KMart, etc. You'll need to spray the product like spray paint over the entire side of material, walk around the other side & spray it entirely as well. Be sure to do this in an EXTREMELY Well ventilated area. Let it dry thoroughly, & spray it again. Once You've sprayed it all, twice, You've definitely covered that side well enough, turn it over & repeat on the other side.
Now it's officially waterproof.
Hope this helped,

If you waterproof it first before you hang it on the wall then I don't think the starch solution that you use to hang the fabric on the wall will work. Might be worth spraying it on after the fabric's on the wall though.
