my mom would hang them upside down and put them in the back part of the closet. She said the darker the greyish/black mark on the leaf, the hardier the plant. And each year the mark would get darker.

I have started bringing in my geraniums for storage. I kept one gorgeous red one in a pot, which I will treat as a houseplant all winter and see how it does. I am storing about 20 hot pink ones in medium sized cardboard boxes in my garage, which is insulated, but not heated. I figure it is cold there, but nothing freezes. The boxes insulate the plants a little better than the bags , I think ...maybe keep the moisture in a bit more. I will check on them in Jan/Feb to see how they are doing. Not all of them will make it, but most will, and it is money-saving garden magic!! I also brought in my Caladiums, -- cut off the wilting stems and let the tubers dry out ...hope they grow again for me next Spring!! I have some begonias I bring in as a houseplant over the winter; it is planted with some variegated ivy and this will be the third summer it has survived and I always hang it in a basket on a big tree branch! I take cuttings from Impatiens and start them indoors, so they are well established for Spring planting. I keep them under lights. All of these frugal measures help defray my gardening expenses each year!!
