We removed a fan from our ceiling.. and about to hook up a new fan.. but, of course, the old wires are all white, and there is a tan wire. No black wires coming out of the house. We have a digital testing unit but of course the directions assume one knows at least something about electricity (which we do not)... any help would be great.

If I were there I could probably determine which is the "hot" and which is the "neutral", but seeing all the same color wires is a bit un-nerving. Do either of them have a black elecrical tape a few inches from the end? This is sometimes done to allow the next electrician a clue.about which is which.

Also, how old is the wiring? It might be worth your time and $$$ to hire an electrician to inspect the entire system.

Almost bought a house in Tarzana in 1985 - but would have had to replace all appliances, wiring, and some plumbing - plus I would never have been able to find my way back up and down the hillside. The realtor that was showing me the house had to stop a "local" to get back down.

thanks.. electrician coming over tomorrow. Neither white wire has any black on it anywhere (already looked for that). House was built in the early 1050s. Guess they didn't have black wires back then.

They have a AC sensor tester that will light up on the hot wire. available at Home depot for under 20 bucks. might be worth the investment.

I did that... but didn't guess which the hot wire was (turned out it was a thick beige wire way up in the hole in the ceiling and all the others were neutral... electrician came out and put them up in just minutes (would have taken us days if not forever).
