I store them in my basement at temperatures between 40F (4C) and the mid 50F (10-13C) range. My Mom stores some in an unheated closet. The most important thing is humidity. Remember to check them occasionally, once a month, it is important to soak the roots overnight if they are drying too much.
As a transplanted Brit I'm struggling to come to terms with zone 8 gardening in Dallas, Texas. Back in the UK I always helped my father with rooting geranium cuttings at the end of summer and it went a long way towards filling many a bed in our 1 acre plot. We also bare root hung them and brought as many as we could to overwinter as house plants. No such luck in TX - - I can't even keep them alive through the summer, neither in my full sun front or dappled shade rear beds or containers. Help please! What am I doing to (or not doing) to the favorite plants of my youth?
I don't think it has anything to do with what you are doing, probably has much more to do with where you live!
You need to find some of the new heat-tolerant cultivars, you should have better luck with them down there.
I have about 7 geraniums I rescued from the compost pile that were only there a day. I re-potted them and have placed them inside in a south window. However, I have another with variegated leaves that I plan to hang up for the winter. We'll see which works. Both, I hope.
