Just changing the title really. We came from here [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
First dutch iris, last of a three year old batch! They don't do all that well after the first flowering season, but this one has survived. Now if it can survive the spring rain, we're home and hosed!

Daffodils are just getting better every year - I didn't plant them so they come as a pleasant surprise every spring.
some haven't flowered till now...
and I have been here 8 years!
The camellias are coming out nicely too.

Lucky you, DH dug up all my daffodils (and cut every bulb in half while doing so) they had never flowered, and apparently don't do well her, but they had history! Never mind, he gave me a $100 limit at a nursery the next week to make up for it! I wish I had another patch of daffodils to send him into! LOL

Those wonderful salvias have flowered all winter for me Sue aren't they lovely? ...such value, they never seem to be without flowers so long as we pinch the dead stuff off.
Hi terriculture how has your summer been for you? those annual salvias are just beautiful aren't they? they seed everywhere too ...just push the mulch aside and sprinkle the little black seeds around (they look just like bits of black pepper) and they pop up where ever they land..they are supposed to be annuals but they never die in sheltered positions. Sorry no pics but it's poured all day, maybe tomorrow, thanks for the pretty Spring show everyone.

Good morning ladies. Your flowers are all lovely. I went out this morning and found the first rosebud on the bushes. The climbing Iceberg already has buds but the bushes are usually a bit later . The bud is not open yet but the flower is a lovely pink and white . The daffodils have not all fallen over with the rain this year. They seem to be stronger and are certainly staying out a lot longer.
I see your gorgeous orchid , chrissy. Hello Terri and Sue. I hope to have some more salvias blooming as I have planted a lot of new ones this year.
Here are some of my Spring flowers.
Hyacinth --love the scent of these

so many lovely flowers...
mine are getting there despite the rain & cold.
At least today was sunny & cold just to be different:)
I love white camellias but they tend to go mushy & brown here.
I did some serious clean up on my white/pink camellia.
Hoping that by cutting off any brown blooms & picking up any from on the ground I can have a decent display.

Annette - those salvias are lovely.
I have never grown them, I can feel the urge to research coming on.
I know they grow in ChCh, just have to figure out what part of my garden would suit them best:)
I am quite lucky as I have most conditions covered, dry shade, moist shade, hot & sunny, well drained...
Something to suit all manner of different plants.
And there are plants here growing in the complete opposite to what they should.
Just don't tell them that!

Ahh lovely, just makes you want to drive in, luckily you have all sorts of conditions as salvias are quite diverse and you can cater to quite a few of their needs.

Always wanted to visit New Zealand, it always looks so green, but alas first port of call is going to be Sweden, my son is living over there and is going to make me a grandmother, yikes, hope it is a girl after having 6 sons that would be great, but alas as long as the baby is healthy doesnt matter what sex she is lol.

Hi all.
Hi Annette, my friend just gave birth to her 6th daughter. I don't know if they'll try for a son again, or if they'll give up! I'd be scared of the thought of 6 girls going through teenage angst! LOL
This is so great going into Spring and seeing all the flowers.
Dalfyre, your gateway is indeed inviting. Christchurch is the garden city, is it not? I went there once, in february, but only for a day on the way to nelson. we stayed at a caravan park with a hot pool and a bird aviary. It was quite a nice town from what we saw.
Thanks Terri. Fathers day was nice. I managed to be a caring wife till about 4.30pm, by which time I was cranky and DH had to accept that fathers day was over! I made him breakfast, and gave him some sox from my daughter, (we organised it earlier in the week) and a Johnny Cash DVD and block of Tirramisu chocolate from me, cause I knew his kids would probly not bother. I was wrong, as one of them did send him a text message, so he was halfway happy.
I took pics after the rain, but everything was a bit damaged. But NOW, its all booming!

Hi all, well spring has certainly sprung and all those photos prove it. I love the blue of salvias, it is so intense. Ihave given the blue one at my gate a hard prune so it should be nice this year. The pic I have here is a dipidax. I only grow it in a pot as I think I would lose it in the garden. But I think it cute.

Weed-Woman ChCh is known as 'the Garden City', I like that Ixia, think I have a different colour.
Slowly learning to id my plants.
Some gardener was a busy soul here years ago.
I actually met a former owner of this house, small world we were on a computer course, she was responsible for some of the lovely plantings here so I was able to thank her for that:)
I am nearly over my nasty cold & hoped to use my day off in the garden.
The weather is grey, drizzly & with a nasty cold wind.
If the wind dies down I may brave it, don't mind a bit of drizzle.
So much weeding to be done & the lawns...
meadow garden perhaps?

At a mere $2.00 per cyclamen I decided to experiment & plant them in my woodland garden.
I have read that you can do that with potted cyclamens once they start getting 'tired' & not flowering so well.
The ones I bought were outside in the garden section so it won't be too big a shock for them.
The azaleas are in the same area as the azalea I brought with me from my last house, it is doing ok there so hopefully the new ones will like it too.

Your plant is Cotyledon orbiculata 'macrantha form' . I did a long post on it and it's relatives in September 2007. The post is in this thread (you will have to hit Page Down about 4 times) : [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] This will make you laugh - I just checked to see if you had been on that thread and you posted to it a day before my post and not since. I should have put succulent plants there. i know most of my "normal" plants. This cotyledon has been growing in this space for around 7 years and is always a beauty. it does not tend to fall over as much as the burgundy rosette thing next to it or the yellow flowered thingy near it . They all look great now after the rain but by the end of summer will be very straggly. They never get watered . I originally just stuck a few bits in to fill up the bare space near the clothes line and they have really filled that space. I will write the name down and gradually get all the others right too. All the smaller succulents are in a small shadehouse and like it there as it gets sun but is away from the cold south side. I will post a few more pics one day and ask you very nicely to ID them for me.

Chrissy that chinese lantern is brilliant, you clever girl you. Have you tried a cutting yet. I enquired after the name of the white flower but never mind, now I know. I have a white one but the flower isin't as firm as your one, it is more crinkly where as that one is smooth and firm looking. I have a friend that grows lots of ch/l's and the colours she gets from the x pollination are lovely. I never had any luck with the cuttings though. Could have been the wrong time to take them of course. A good easy care high value plant i think. Perhaps your camera is set on flash Chrissy. Is your camera one of these new fangled ones? if so I know how you feel. Nearly every time I use mine I need to get out the manual. I used to take beautiful photos with my old SLR but this new one has a mind of it's own, but at least I don't have to wait for a result.

i know how you fell Chrissy and Lesley. With my new camera, I carry the book around. It has so many buttons, one is careful how one holds it in case of pressing a wrong button. I could not figure out the macro lens bit but luckily one of hubbys friends called in the other day, and he is a photographer so showed me what to do.
Of course as soon as he was gone , I forgot half of what he said. Darn old brain. I loved my old Canon 35 mm, but with computers , you need digital. The software that came with this Canon is fantastic. I will never puzzle out half of it, but boy , you can play with pictures.
The Chinese Lanterns are very easy to grow from cuttings. All mine came from a lovely old lady, since deceased, so I remember her when i see them . I have 2 different orange, white, peach, pink, yellow and dark pink plus a red There is also a dwarf yellow and one with a narrow flower of red and yellow..

Isn't it wonderful to remember who gave you the plant ...one of my favourite kinds of gardening.
Lesley yes perhaps you take the cuttings at the wrong time ...just shove them in in mild weather into well draining mix ... in a bit of shade.
Every piece takes for me ...water in with seaweed solution. I have just been given lots of old half dead pots of weedy stuff with hidden treasure in them ...young Clivia hybrids ...they said they are cream and yellow ...wow if they are!
Mandevilla ...vines
White Azalias
and some sort of bulb things ???? waiting until they flower.
So I am off to weed repot etc
Where will I put them ...ha ha ha aren't we a hopeless (but happy) bunch.
Enjoy the day everyone!

Hello Lee. I just popped in to see if there are enough cakes for the day.
Yes this is my shop. I saw the idea on the US forums and liked it, so borrowed to set up shop here.
I have been outside and it is freezing. After yesterday's warmth, it is ridiculous. One never knows what to wear each day.
I found this recipe site Lee. It has fantastic recipes which I use to feed the garden ladies on DG. You can see if it works and then go mad cooking .
Time for a cuppa for me now.

Nice wisteria Chrissy, My one here has a few buds on it so I guess it has had a reprieve. I had a standard one for years until I came down here, must have got the sulks because it died the first winter. So did the one I had on a pergola. There had been no sign of anything wrong with either of them. Possibly too many hard frosts that winter. I was a bit disappointed as it took a long time to get them how I wanted. The standard one used to flower twice a year and was quite beautiful.
Jean your epi is lovely mine are just starting to get buds yet our temps have been pretty much the same, up around 19c. Mind you I think Crissy said that the temp at her place was up in the30's. I think I have an epi like that Red with abluish sheen haven't seen it flower for a few years though. That is quite early. I have about 3 D/Lily's flowering but if the night is too cold the flowers wont open properly so I wish they would just wait.. Lovely yellow violet as well Dalfyre.

Hello Lelsy. That epi flowered last season before I pruned all the old growth off so I may not get much this year. I had to cut them back as they were so bad when I bought them all. They are bigger now with all the new growth but I see no sign of flowers as yet, on any of the new growth. I have buds on some of the old growth that was left on. . My original red will always flower prolifically. I hope all the others take note and follow.
I love wisterias but it is not worth my while starting one here as it would be so slow growing. I did buy a rooted cutting once but it was such a pathetic little thing and it died before it even got going. They do grow up in Bright in N E Vic, so the cold doesn't worry them much once they are doing well.
Lee , did you get into the recipe site at all. It is American but you can substitute most things.
I am going out to inspect the garden after the wild winds in the night. will catch up in the Tea Room later for a cuppa. Jean

jean, all of you make me feel good and god knows i need it. nasty storms?--did you get any damage to plants, property, etc.? we get hail here from time to time but usually never the size they get in other parts of the country, such as in the mid-plains. they can get baseball size there, large enough to knock a mule down.
since ike has moved on, we're cooling off, thank goodness. it;'s suppose to be only in the 20'sC. now, i don't do this temp. conversion for just anybody, mind you. just the people i like. lol luckily, i have a little pocket size dictionary device that has temp, size, etc. conversions. good day to you all. p.s. yes, i still am holding you responsible for any weight gain. but truly, i am going to try some of the recipes asap.

Sue your flowers are lovely and your gardens are beautiful, I'm kind of jealous but in a nice way, lol. It repays you well for all the hard work you put into it. As each season comes around all the planning and hard work comes together probably a feeling only other gardeners would understand. but it certainly gives one a great feeling of wellbeing and accomplishment.
I just have to ask you Sue, would you have an Achmea winkeri flowering that you could show me. Once again a snail has chewed off a new flower so after 3 years I still haven't seen it and it will be another 2 probably before the tiny pup flowers. I HATE SNAILS!!! they go straight past the bait to eat the flowers. The gamosepala has lost all its flowers as well. Every day I go through the plants looking for the little beasties, then I go and check them out before I go to bed, I kill so many all the birds are getting fat on them Grrrr.. Before long I'll be having nightmares about them, lol. Kakete Lesley.

Hello Sue and Lesley.
ha ha Lesley. I don't have snails. No, not a single one. They live down in the town in great numbers but have never ventured up the hill. I double check every plant and pot that comes in here . There are slugs which I control with snail pellets. We do have masses of Harlequin bugs during the warm weather . They are annoying but don't really do a lot of damage that I have seen.
We are having a quiet morning. No wind, no rain. but it is supposed to come again. The rain was welcome but we did have a lot of hail during the storms. Luckily only small hail.
Sue is that an Azalea I see near the Ixias ? .
My Ixias are budding but not out for a while yet. Some of the babianas are budding too. Don't they make a great border ?
My Ixias all came from an old farm that was demolished for the Blue gums.
I dug up huge clumps and planted everywhere. You would not believe it but after the first year of mixed colors, they have flowered each year with individual clumps each of the one color. I have clumps of red, clumps of yellow etc. Very odd.
Better go and put on the kettle, someone may come into the Tea Room for a cake. Jean.

Hi Lesley, no I don't have an Aechmea winkleri, but I checked out the pic on the FBS site. [HYPERLINK@d3684183.u30.infinology.com] I've put one on for you, but it's very small.
As for snails, I use a bait called multicrop, and it's only ingredient is Iron chellate, which is poison to snails and slugs but not anything else. It actually breaks down into the soil so its good all around. Also, if anything, (bird or lizard or pets) eat the poisoned snail, it has no effect so If you can find something like it over there Lesley, give it a go. Don't put it down the centre bromeliad tank though. I get it at bunnings for $3.50 for 600g.
Hi jean, yes thats an Azalea. they do quite well up here, surprisingly. The ixias are all creamy yellow, but if like yours, they change colour, that would be great! The Babianas are really beginning to flower now, but it's hard to judge exactly when they'll be at their best.
Hel, your roses are beautiful and the Anthuriums too~! Like Lee, I'll help with that bottle of wine! Ha ha. Yum, yum.
Hurry up with that cake Jean, I'm starving. (not really, I just ate dinner!)

Hi Sue and All,
Ixia's don't change colour. I have proven it by separating out all of my original bulbs and growing their progeny in individual pots. What I think happens in mixtures is that one or two bulbs will prove genetically stronger than the rest so over time you will get more and more of that particular colour. Check out my Ixia pages here [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] If you click on the "View" links at the right of any of the "Mixed Hybrid" records at the bottom of the page, you will be able to see all the different flowers from last year. Each of these started as just one bulb in a pot on it's own back in 2005 but you will note that some of them have been much more prolific than others.

The ones at the top of the page marked as "Candy Chimes" were new acquisitions this year, they are just about to open their first flowers - it will be exciting! Already the plants seem to be much more robust than my original strain and the flowers seem to be developing about two to three weeks earlier than my others. Waiting to see what you are going to get like this is a bit like Christmas - all anticipation and tenterhooks!

Ha ha kk I did know that. I know Dutch Iris will do the same thing. I have a lovely bed of yellows and whites. The other colors have been pushed out and died.
I think it's strange that each clump of the Ixias has been taken over by a different color. You would think if a color was going to be dominant , it would be the same one. Perhaps they just like to be with their friends of the same color. I will post pics when they come out. The area of old garden where they came from also gave me heaps of gorgeous Nerines and some kniphofias.
Babianas are so pretty along the path. Mine seem to like jumping about to visit other parts of the garden but I don't mind. I bought a mystery bag of bulbs one year and when they flowered there were beautiful burgundy colored babianas in there . The cloud is coming over again so the day will go downhill from here. I am going to have a little lunch now. here are some of my Spring pics.
No 1 Wallflowers . So pretty, mine self seed everywhere.

Hi Jean,
Can't quite see enough detail in #3 to be sure but it could be a true Geranium (ie a Cranesbill, not a Pelargonium). In the meantime here's a nice surprise I git this morning. Three of my new Ixias have their first flowers open. This is the one I like best so far the other two are mostly yellow, pretty enough, but this is a standout!

I do have another cranesbill out there , but it grows a lot larger than this tidy little one. I'd put up another pic but the computer is having a day of no more photos. I may have to take the darn thing to shop for a check up. It does have fits sometimes. i think it is a problem with the ports.

Hi folks, it has been a beautiful day today and I have been outside all day. Aphids have arrived full force on the roses so have given them a good spray. I'm sure its the ants carting them around, they are in my pot plants all though the gardens and on all the roses, they even climb the fruit trees and climb down into my hanging plants. That is a good pic of winkleri Sue thanks at least I don't have to wait for it to flower now. Fancy you not having one, lol. I had a clump of the bright pink Ixia for years. It would come up flower and then get mowed down with the grass then after many years a yellow one came up about 6ft away and did its own thing there, most strange. Its still going strong. I like the colour of the last flower you posted, very nice. Have a good day shopping Jean, I wonder what new plant you will come home with???
Sorry no pics I have run out so will have to take some more tomorrow.
