Hi, I am looking for something to plant around our new pool. I need to be very frugal. How do the vines handle chlorine water? Your set up looks great!
Hello! Thank you! We just built the pool 6/2007 so had a 'blank slate' last Spring. My husband is quite knowledgable but I wanted a more tropical look so I got involved, and learned a lot but still very much a beginner. The Salt/Chlorine water doesn't affect our plants much except one spitter (not in photo) where my husband planted a beautiful yellow canna...which took over and has leaves that interferes with the path of the spitter. below the canna the water has killed a few annuals and a lorepetelum. My husband is the King of Frugal, so I'll tell you the plants he chose for the rim of the pool in order, clockwise. Dwarf Banana, spiral ginger, agapanthus, dwarf ruella/mexican petunia, windmill palm, indian hawthorne, iris, red canna(he got free from Disneyworld), amaryllis, yellow canna, pineapple guava, lariope, red canna, varigated ginger, bottlebrush, iris, firecracker plant, and a pretty ground cover sedum (he got free from a nursery, it has a hot pink bloom and spreads over rocks).
Here are the plants I added/talked him into-clockwise: portulaca, black knight elephant ears, hibiscus, nandina, mexican heather, gazania's, sego palm (a different variety) Oregano, Sweet Basil, parsley (not counting the ones that didn't make it). Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see a photo...
When are you going to start planting? We had a lot of fun last March-May getting it all done!
