This is so useful, I had occasion recently to correct a friend who said 'did you see my new palms' when what she had were Sagos... but I've been confused myself with some other varieties so it's good to see them here all together.

What are the features we should look for? It appears we now know are pretty clear about what they aren't?

palms are flowering plants and it is something about their flowers that sets them apart though I don't know the details (almost all other plants that look like palms have very differnet (or none) flowers). they are related to grasses. With few exceptions, they are non-branching. They have stems that end in a terminal bud from which a new leaf at a time grows. Their are no succulent palms. I will see if I can come up with a precise definition later (just need to look in one of my palm books).

As I recall, Sago palms are related to pine trees. Wierd, but if you look at them a bit, it is not unbelievable.
