Carrie, this wonderful article brings back many memories for me. My husband, with much protest, packed the car to take our eldest daughter, Shannon, who was 17 almost 18, from Marshall, TX (in east Texas) to UT at Austin. He just could NOT understand WHY she would not LOVE to attend the nearby Kilgore Junior College. He had gone to Kilgore Junior College BEFORE he went to UT, so of course, it was good enough for his baby daughter. There had been many previous tearful discussions about this, but HE just did NOT want to LET GO! If I had not been on her side, I doubt if she would have ever gotten out of town. It was the BEST decision we ever made!
I was not fortunate to enough to be able to plant a garden for her, because she lived in one of those high-rise dorms the first year, and horror of horrors, a co-ed dorm no less. The good thing was she roomed with her best friend. It was a very different experience for all of us.
To tell you the truth, I WISH my daughter were in a nice, safe dorm with no utility bills to keep up with and with curfews and rules! Oh well . . . I hope she's happy. Thank you for your lovely comment.
