As a CajuninKy, I enjoyed your article very much. I have my Community New Orleans Blend sent to me in care packages from family back home. They feel sorry for me moving to this uncivilized area where you can't get a good cup of coffee. LOL If you go to Community Coffee's web site, I think you can have it shipped to you.

We moved here to eastern Ky from Dulac, La. 5 years ago. That's 90 minutes south of New Orleans. We lived 15 minutes off the gulf by boat. We REALLY miss the fresh seafood. My DH had a charter fishing business and he was a shrimp fisherman also. We ate fresh, caught the same day seafood everyday. You just can't get good seafood here.

Cajun, I know exactly what you mean. My husband grew up in Orange, Texas, but I had learned about chicory long before that.
You are very close to where I grew up, I had a college roommate from Inez. I know about the lack of lots of good things there.
JustmeLisa lives fairly close to me, so she has promised to fix me up with some Louisiana chicory coffee. Sometimes I can get Community coffee here, but not always. I am just keeping my fingers crossed!
Thanks for writing. I drool every time I read my own article. :-)

Who was your room mate? I might know them. I met Lisa here on Dave's but the funny thing is we lived about 45 minutes apart in La. and never knew each other.

My roomate is no longer there and has been gone for many years, but her last name was Williamson. I can't remember what her family did, and haven't kept up with her. Also don't know who she married. She never came to the reunions or to any post graduation events.

Used to know some people in Paintsville, too...and what is that town that is sort of a craft center for mountain crafts...maybe Redbird? Well, it used to be anyway. It has been too long, and I just can't remember. Old age, no doubt.

I only know 1 Williamson, a man, and he is a kinda sleazy type. It stinks to lose touch with people you get close to. I was so glad when I was able to get in contact with my best friend from high school. We lost touch after I got married and moved away. I tried to find her but she had moved across the country. I finally was able to find her through classmates.com. She lives in CA now and is very successful in many ways and not so much in others. But I guess that could be said for all of us.

The only place I know called Redbird is past the Paintsville stock market going towards Morgan County. We pass through there on our way to Patoker Camp Ground. We will be going there this weekend. We take our horses and camp and trail ride. We went there 2 weeks ago. Last weekend we went to the old German Bridge Camp Ground in Pike County. It's towards Lower John's Creek and borders Dewey Lake. It's a great ride.

I lived in Whitesburg, closer to Hazard than to you. It is in Letcher County, and you are where, Johnson County maybe?

Not really, I just had not been there in a long time. And I lived bordering the Virginia line, so really did not go much further north than Pike county sometimes. Or Jenny Wiley State Park, sometimes Dewey Lake, but those weren't there when I was little. They came after I was grown and gone.

Thanks for the memories.
Should I tell you now that my husband's stepmother was Cajun, and she taught me to make a mean gumbo!!!

You know, I can't remember...I know she was working in the town where there was a huge oil explosion in about 48. Would that have been Texas City? I don't know, but her sister lived very near where they lived when Bob lived with them when he was young, and that was in Orange. They still lived in the same place when I visited in the early 70's. Most of her friends were in New Iberia, though.
She was absolutely the best cook...I wish I had learned more from her. Maybe I can get Lisa to teach me. She had wonderful pralines at the DG RoundUp this past weekend.

Ohhhh...pralines! Be still my heart! LOL Nothing like 'em.

I mean the government forgets about Martin County. We are last in everything. Except drug problems. So sad.

I don't know what they are called. I see them a lot on my hikes and rides and one day I decided to plant some in my backyard. I was pleasantly suprised when they bloomed. I had never seen them bloom.
