I have been hauling my trees in for the winter (I live in crestwood kentucky) for the past 4 years and this year I have the fruit... I just looked up how to harvest them and discovered that it takes three to six months after flowering for them to mature... What i did was roll them up onto a movers platform with wheels ( they use to move large pieces) and rolled the dirt ball up on that this way I could push them into the basement. I took a tarp and laid the root ball and dirt on it and angled the top up on a desk and watered them when ever I thought of it.. which wasn't too often and wrap the plastic tarp haphazardly around it. each year the amount increased and this year I may have to give some away... as i am overrun.. but when global warming takes over I will probably have enough for a plantation! I started out with a two foot plant and now they must be 15 feet tall they are huge.. one i just planted the bulb and have a very nice looking plant from it ... i guess I am obsessed but loving this adventure...I'll let you know what happens to the stalk through the winter i may try to leave it on and see if they mature in the basement...hope so as it's my dream to eat a freshly picked banana... I hope the humming bird goes south for winter...he fiercely protects that flower .
