So, I survived the Japanese beetle onslaught of '08, hand picked them off into soapy water. Mostly they Ate my Rose of Sharron and one of my knockouts for some reason...the other 17 bushes were fairly ok. But now, I have several of my roses being eaten by something mysterious. There are huge holes in the leaves and some of them are kind of skeletonized, but in a bigger sense, all but the stems...this is happening to my dublin bay, another knockout, my Louise Clements and Mr. Lincoln...the other now 32 bushes (busy season!) seem OK so far. What is weird is, I never see the pest anywhere like with borers or aphids or beetles so I'm stumped what to do about it. I only use organic methods so I've sprayed them with neem (ok, not sure it is certified organic yet, but you get the idea). Doesn't seem to have done any good. Anyone else have this issue?
One thing of note this season; I planted a clump of chives in back of and another between my Just Joey and Peace (was very paranoid about growing teas, most of my stuff is shrub and climbers)...and nothing has touched them all season...so it is Alliums for everyone in the fall! I'm doing garlic and chives under all my plants in a few weeks. Hopefully that will make for fewer attacks next season. I'd love to do milky spore but my lawn is 60,000 square feet...needless to say that is fairly cost prohibitive.
